DEPARTMENT: DPW- Water Department
SUMMARY:
Under supervision/direction, the water system maintenance worker performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual work
in the construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of a water system including water mains, service connections,
hydrants, meters, and valves. Must be available for emergency work in the event of a water main failure (nights, weekends, and
holidays). May be required to work Emergency Night Stand-by Duty.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Under supervision/direction, operates motorized vehicle as directed by supervising authority. Performs skilled and semi-skilled manual work in the construction, operation and maintenance of a water system.
- Install and repair water mains and appurtenances.
- Install and repair water service connections.
- Operate, clean, and maintain tapping and drilling machines.
- Operate, clean, and maintain pumping equipment used in the installation and maintenance of water mains and service connections.
- Repairs trenches and excavations by patching with bituminous and concrete materials.
- Installs, maintains, repairs, and "winter checks" fire hydrants. Install and/or remove domestic, commercial and industrial meters.
- Excavate and backfill trenches.
- Must be available to assist with snow removal operations, not only during normal working hours but also available evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- May be required to work Emergency Stand-by Duty.
- Washes and cleans all motor vehicles, as directed by the foreman or other supervising authority.
- Maintains material stock on utility trucks as directed by the supervising authority.
- On an as-needed basis, you may be required to read water meters.
- Performs all related duties as directed by the Superintendent or other supervising authority.
- Abides by City of Chicopee Health and Safety policies and procedures.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR CITY PROPERTY/FINANCES:
Responsible for the safekeeping of Water Department/City property, equipment, supplies, tools etc.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May be responsible for supervising seasonal staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). One (1) year experience working for a Water Department
and/or Contractor with installation and maintenance of water mains, appurtenances, and water services. Knowledge of and
experience in performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and manual tasks. Working knowledge of a wide variety
of hand tools, air tools and hydraulic tools. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Willingness to perform heavy
manual labor.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple
correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers,
clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform
these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Massachusetts Class B CDL driver's license required, Class A CDL driver’s license preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing
the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to
perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside
weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, and airborne
particles/debris. Majority of the work will be outdoors, as a result there is exposure to changing weather conditions, odors,
fumes dirt, dust, confined spaces and mud. Traffic hazards exist due to the majority of the water mains are in the street.
Potential danger of cave-ins, falling objects. Potential exposure to hazardous waste (blacktop and asbestos). Potential
exposure to natural gas leaks, electrical lines and water main failures
DEGREE OF CONTACT WITH OTHERS:
Moderate degree of contact with other departments within the City, also with a variety of Vendors, occasionally
contractors, and the general public.
RECORDS AND REPORTS:
Depending on the specific job, certain reporting must be made to the foreman (daily).
