Signal Technician I

The purpose of this position is to maintain, install, verify, and debug traffic control devices and video camera systems to ensure proper operation, and to install, prep, splice, test and maintain fiber optic communication lines and network.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs preventative or emergency maintenance of all traffic control devices.
• Utilizes aerial bucket trucks for repairs and installations.
• Sets up, installs, and verifies the operation or debugging of traffic control hardware, traffic signal detection systems, IP surveillance video camera and systems, and computer network communication devices.
• Inspects and oversees contractor installed traffic-controlled devices.
• Locates underground traffic signal and communication lines.
• Uses notification system to cross-check which ticket that pertains to the maintenance area.

Supplemental Functions:

• Performs other similar duties as required.

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

Knowledge:

• Methods, materials, & techniques in construction, maintenance, operations
• Fiber optic splice and install principles;
• Electrical and electronic traffic control systems principles and practices;
• Equipment and tools of the trade;
• Applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.

Licensing and Certifications:

• Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
• Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License preferred.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

• Positions in this class require: standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, fine dexterity, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing/pulling, lifting, vision, foot controls.

• Very Heavy: Exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50 - 100 pounds frequently, or from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly.

• Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

• Operating a computer and applicable software applications;
• Aerial bucket operations;
• Applying local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations;
• Reading and interpreting data;
• Electrical wiring;
• Fiber optic splicing;
• Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

High school diploma or equivalency, with at least one (1) year of relevant experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
