Minimum job requirements include:

Graduation from high school or GED required

North Carolina Firefighter Certification (or enrolled in a current Fire Academy)

  • Contingent on completing the Fire Academy and subsequent North Carolina

Firefighter Certifications

North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician

North Carolina Hazardous Materials Level I

Valid N.C. Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (provide a copy along with

one additional valid identification document)

NIMS Courses: IS-100; IS-200; ICS-300; ICS-400; IS-700; IS-800

Provide proof of each certification and course listed above with the submitted application.

Non-submittal of certificate and or course will deem the application incomplete. Provide

with the application submittal an NC OSFM Transcript and a FEMA Transcript.

Much of the work performed within the firefighter position is under emergency conditions and

frequently involves considerable personal hazards. The role of a firefighter requires significant

physical activity. The essential functions of the firefighter position may include, however, are not

limited to, such functions as entering burning buildings with hose lines, operating nozzles, and

hydrant/water supply operations. Other functions and duties include rescue operations, ladder

operations, salvage and overhaul, working from heights, maintaining fire apparatus and equipment, and

daily and weekly cleaning of fire stations.

Responsibilities include responding to emergency and non-emergency situations, written and

computerized record-keeping, hydrant maintenance, fire prevention activities, and general

housekeeping and grounds maintenance. The irregular schedule of a firefighter includes nights,

weekends, holidays, and emergency callbacks. Subject to hazards commonly associated with fire,

rescue, emergency, and non-emergency incident response.

Must pass a background investigation, and physical examination, submit to and have negative results

on drug screening test and complete an oral interview. Salary commensurate with qualifications and

experience.

FIREFIGHTER/EMT

General Statement of Duties:

Performs skilled and specialized duties exclusive to firefighter activities, including fire

prevention and fire suppression, and performs intermediate protective emergency services work.

Work performance in the position of a firefighter is conducted under regular supervision.

Distinguishing Features of the Class:

  • Much of the work performed within the position is under emergency conditions and

frequently involves considerable personal hazards. The role of a firefighter requires

significant physical activity.

  • The essential functions of the firefighter position may include, however, are not limited to,

such functions as entering burning buildings with hose lines, operating nozzles, and

hydrant/water supply operations.

  • Ability to wear a respirator (SCBA) to perform firefighting operations safely or perform

rescues in conditions where smoke or gases may be present; duties may require SCBA usage

for thirty (30) minutes to several hours at one time.

  • Features of the position may include rescue operations, ladder operations, salvage and

overhaul, maintaining fire apparatus/equipment, and cleaning of fire stations.

  • Have the ability to work extended hours and days to meet all operational needs when

necessary.

  • The position of a firefighter is subject to duty recall at any time by the Incident Commander

or the Fire Chief.

Illustrative Examples of Work:

  • Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry,

ventilation, overhaul and salvage work, and cleaning of equipment;

  • Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment in a ready state, cleaning fire station and

grounds; assists with checking all equipment and apparatus; performing simple and routine

maintenance;

  • Participates in continuing training and instruction programs by practical evolutions and

individual study of technical materials, and attendance at scheduled training drills and

classes;

  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains fire hoses, pumps, hydrants, and related equipment;
  • Maintains physical fitness by actively participating in a personal training program;
  • As needed, assists in the enforcement of fire codes; may instruct in training classes;
  • Prepares and submits required reports;
  • Conducts station tours for the public, schools, and community;
  • Assists in conducting pre-planning studies;
  • May be assigned to a particular area or projects as necessary, i.e., Hazardous Material

Response, High-Level Rescue, or Confined Space Rescue;

  • Performs other firefighting and related emergency tasks consistent with standards for the

position;

  • Tests hoses, ground ladders, breathing apparatus, and related firefighting equipment;

  • Performs other related duties as required or directed by an officer or a higher seniority shift

member.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures applied to fire suppression, fire

prevention, and pre-planning strategies and techniques; emergency medical techniques and

methods; and technical firefighting principles and practices.

  • General knowledge of techniques and principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression,

thorough understanding of the street systems and physical layout of the City of Conover.

  • General knowledge of hazardous materials and accident extrication principles and

techniques; understand and follow oral and written instructions and commands;

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public;

possess a mechanical aptitude.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform essential physical and life operational functions of standing,

walking, hearing, kneeling, reaching, feeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing,

crawling, fingering, and performing repetitive motions.

  • Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50

pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly.

  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate a fire apparatus, including reading dials and gauges.

Education and Experience (Minimum requirements for the position of firefighter include):

  • Graduation from high school or GED required
  • North Carolina Firefighter Certification 2013 Edition
  • North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician Certification
  • North Carolina Emergency Vehicle Driver certification
  • Valid N.C. Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to obtain a North Carolina Class B Driver’s License with six months of hire date
  • Possession of or ability to attain NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications within six

months of hire date

  • Possession of or ability to obtain North Carolina Technical Rescuer certification within one

year of hire date

  • Experience in fire prevention, suppression, emergency medical services, or an equivalent

combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements for the position of a firefighter:

  • Valid N.C. Class C Driver’s License, with acceptable driving record, and possess the ability

to obtain a North Carolina Class B Driver’s License with two years of hire date

  • Individuals must complete the Catawba County Emergency Medical Services Training

Manual within 8 months of the hire date.
