ENERGY DEPARTMENT
Division: Gas
Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7am-4pm
Job Summary:
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in the servicing of the gas distribution system.
Examples of work performed: assist with locating leaks in gas pipelines; conduct regular maintenance checks on gas pressure and odorant at regulator stations; install gas mains and service lines; install meters and regulators; assist in turning on/off gas to customer; by taking meter readings, lighting pilot lights, conducting physical inspection of connections and usability of equipment; complete and maintain records and reports; operate a variety of light and heavy equipment; performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of materials and equipment used in general maintenance and construction work.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions pertaining to the gas industry.
Knowledge of city street names and locations.
Ability to obtain operator-qualified certification to regulate and make repairs on a gas distribution system
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to operate a variety of hand-held and power equipment.
Ability to produce routine records and simple reports.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Qualifications:
High school education or equivalent required. One year experience in pipeline construction or maintenance preferred. Must be able to pass DOT Drug/Alcohol test. Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license and must be able to obtain a CDL.
Essential Functions:
Work involves considerable strenuous physical activity including walking, using hand and power tools to dig holes/trenches, and lifting (occasionally up to 100 lbs.). Frequent manual placement and manipulation of pipes in tight, confined spaces. Operates City-owned vehicles. Exposed to extreme weather conditions, open ditches, and pressurized gas mains/services. Subject to on-call duty. Possible exposure to fire or explosion during leak repairs.
