WATER DEPARTMENT

WORK HOURS: Monday-Friday; 7am-4pm
JOB SUMMARY:
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work is performed in installing meters and new lines and making repairs to existing water lines throughout the water system.
Examples of work performed: Repairs and clamps water leaks; operates various equipment such as boom, dump, water and service trucks and backhoe. Operates a horizontal earth boring machine to drill through earth for installation of pipelines under roads; taps and drills holes in water main to introduce service into customer establishment and sets meter housings; sets and maintains hydrants; performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in construction and maintenance of water systems
Knowledge of state and city traffic regulations
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions Geographic knowledge of the City
Ability to operate assigned equipment
Ability to investigate and find leaks in the water system
Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time under unfavorable climatic conditions
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school education or equivalent is required. Experience in water line construction or maintenance preferred. Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license and possess, or be able to obtain, a Commercial driver's license within six (6) months of employment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work involves much walking, digging, lifting and carrying. Lifts items weighing one hundred (100) pounds, at times. Works in all types of weather. Frequently exposed to dirt, mud and noise. Hazards include working in deep ditches, operating equipment and tapping pressurized water mains and working in moving traffic. Possible exposure to electrical shock while working around meters where defective household wiring may cause a short between wiring and plumbing. Subject to call out. 20-minute response time is required.
