The City of De Pere is seeking an Engineer Technician to become an integral part of our team. The Engineer Technician performs engineering work associated with drafting, surveying, design and construction inspection, and maintenance of public works projects and other activities.
The City of De Pere may hire at either the Engineer Technician or Engineer Senior Technician level, depending on experience and qualifications.
Wage: Depending on qualifications, plus an excellent benefits package.
Engineer Technician $27.01 - $30.85 per hour
Engineer Senior Technician $31.44 - $35.96 per hour
The City of De Pere rewards employees for exceptional work performance with a pay for performance incentive program. Employees may be awarded a salary increase, bonus, or paid time off for exceptional work performance.
Typical Work Schedule: The normal work schedule is Monday - Thursday, 6:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Friday 6:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. plus additional hours as required to complete assignments. Technicians are required to work additional hours during the construction season. This varies depending on contractor schedules but weekly averages of 45 to 50 plus hours do occur. Technicians receive overtime pay over 40 hours per week. Conduct field investigations and surveys. Assist in establishing preliminary and design surveys to ensure project control and performance.
Inspect construction projects to ensure conformance with plans and specifications and advise appropriate personnel of variance needing correction.
Assist contractors, public corporations, and private individuals in locating municipally-owned facilities.
Draft preliminary and final construction drawings. Prepare exhibits for presentation. Prepare record drawings.
Document the contracting and repair and inspection of all sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water lateral repairs in the public right of way or City of De Pere easements.
Gather information and data by field and office research.
Assist in the preparation of construction plans and bidding documents and prepare quantity and cost estimates.
Assist in maintaining records for Engineering Department activities.
Assist in the preparation of technical and general reports.
Operate surveying and office equipment.
Review and analyze Closed-Circuit Televising (CCTV) studies and reports for determining sanitary and storm sewer projects and contracts.
Maintain prompt, predictable and reliable attendance. Maintain the ability to lawfully operate a motor vehicle.
Perform other duties as assigned.
In addition to the essential functions listed above, the Engineer Senior Technician performs the following essential functions:
Serve as crew chief.
Assist in the basic design of sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water mains, streets, parking lots, and other public works projects.
Coordinate new utility information for inclusion in the City of De Pere Geographic Information System (GIS).
Review and approve permits to install utilities in the City rights of ways.
Assist in supervision and training of seasonal engineering aides.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the principles, practices and materials of public works construction. Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices related to public works projects. Knowledge of erosion control best management practices. Knowledge of the principles and practices of site and construction surveying. Knowledge in the operation of various surveying instruments used by the Public Works Department.
Skill in the operation of equipment needed to effectively perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including modern office equipment.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with business representatives, elected officials, department heads, the general public, and other City employees with courtesy and tact. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public. Ability to utilize a computer and required software. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, temperatures, job sites, uneven terrain, noise, dust, etc. Ability to work the required hours of the position. Ability to work extra hours as needed.

1. Associate Degree in Civil Technology, or equivalent, from an accredited educational institution.
2. Minimum of four years of experience as a Civil Engineering Technician.
3. Experience with GIS and CAD systems are desirable.
4. Practical work experience in construction operations and inspection.
5. Valid unencumbered Wisconsin driver’s license and safe driving record.
A combination of education and experience may be considered.
