PLEASE BE ADVISED: In no case will applications or certifications be accepted after the deadline. In order to receive 5 additional points on the examination for a passing grade, you must also send a copy of your DD214 showing an honorable discharge. The purpose of this position is to receive training in proper procedures to protect the lives and property of the community by providing fire and medical services. This is accomplished by utilizing skills in firefighting and medical activities, responding to fire, emergency and medical calls, completing fire suppression activities, providing patient care, operating fire and medical equipment and apparatus, maintaining firefighting and paramedic certifications and attending training sessions. Other duties may include performing preventative maintenance on fire and medical equipment and apparatus, assisting with fire station maintenance, completing medical and fire documentation, educating the community on fire safety and first aid procedures and interacting with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees unless directed by the Fire Chief.
- Responds to fire and emergency calls by completing fire suppression activities for residential and commercial structures, vehicles, rubbish and grass areas, operating apparatus, removing hazards from emergency scenes, rescuing persons from fire and emergency scenes, utilizing fire extinguishing equipment to suppress fires and documenting actions when appropriate.
- Provides emergency medical services by responding and/or driving ambulance to emergency calls, assessing the medical needs of patients, determining best immediate treatment, administering advanced life support, utilizing advanced medical skills, operating life-saving equipment, driving apparatus to emergency scenes, assisting patients to emergency centers, completing medical reports, stocking medical supplies and documenting all services provided.
- Maintains fire-fighting and paramedic equipment and fire station property by performing preventative maintenance on equipment and machinery, ensuring apparatus is operating properly and safely, determining if problematic or faulty parts exist, replacing faulty parts, completing lawn activities such as mowing lawn, assisting with fire station cleaning activities and documenting maintenance actions when appropriate.
- Educates the community about fire safety by responding to citizen inquiries and questions on fire safety, presenting fire safety tips to local schools and businesses, demonstrating appropriate personal actions during fires or emergencies, illustrating proper fire extinguisher use and first aid procedures and assisting with public tours of the fire station when necessary.
- Assist in conducting fire inspections, by visiting various City structures, observing and investigating the premises, determining compliance with fire safety codes and ordinances and documenting findings.
- Maintains current medical and firefighting certifications by participating in continuing education related to medical, fire fighting, driving and computer skills and completing appropriate paperwork for training received.
- Performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. The employee may choose the appropriate procedure or policy. Performance is reviewed periodically.
- Must have high school diploma/GED
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 36 on the day of the written exam
- Must be certified Firefighter/EMT or certified Paramedic to take entrance level civil service examination. Basic Firefighter certification and/or Paramedic certification must be obtained in the time frame provided by the Fire Chief.
- Must be able to pass written exam, oral boards and physical agility examinations.
- Must have valid driver's license
- Must have driving record sufficient for coverage by City's auto liability carrier
- Work requires broad professional and technical knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature in fire.
- Knowledge is normally acquired through certification as an EMT/Paramedic with the Texas Department of Health and completion of the Texas Commission on Fire Protection requirements for certification at the firefighter basic level.
- Paramedic certification is strongly preferred
- Considerable knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative or technical nature in fire
- Knowledge in functioning as a lead worker performing essentially the same work as those directed, and includes overseeing work quality, training instructing and scheduling work.
ABILITY TO:
- Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
- Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
- Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Denison Fire Rescue physical agility will consist of eight (8) events; one (1) untimed Aerial ladder climb followed by seven (7) consecutive timed events with a five and a half (5.5) minute pass/fail time.
Untimed event
100’ Aerial ladder climb with helmet and gloves and a forty-five (45 lb.) vest. Applicant will ascend and touch the top rung of the 100’ Aerial ladder in a controlled manor touching every rung, and then descend in a controlled manor touching every rung until both feet are on the turntable while secured to a safety line.
Timed events (with helmet, gloves and forty-five (45 lb.) vest.
Event one: Drag an inch and three quarter (1 ¾ “) charged hose line 100’ and place nozzle in the designated area without dropping the nozzle.
Event two: Carry two kettle bells (30 lbs. each) seventy-five (75) feet down and back for a total of one hundred and fifty (150) feet and place them back in the starting position.
Event three: Drive Keiser sled the total length of the sled.
Event four: Move six (6) two and a half inch (2 ½”) hose rolls from the ground onto a hose rack and then place six (6) hose rolls back on the ground in the starting position.
Event five: Carry 100’ inch and three-quarter high-rise (1 ¾”) pack over shoulder a distance of seventy-five (75) feet down and back for a total of one hundred and fifty (150) feet and place back in the starting position.
Event six: Remove 24’ extension ladder from ladder rack, place extension ladder flat with both rungs on the ground in a controlled manor and then replace extension ladder back on the rack in a controlled manor.
Event seven: Drag 185 lb. rescue mannequin seventy-five (75) feet utilizing the drag device or under arm fire fighter drag. Time will stop when the mannequins’ feet cross the finish line.
THIS WILL COMPLETE THE PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST
Each candidate will have his/her vitals assessed by medical staff on scene before and after the physical agility test!
