About this Position
Duluth Parks & Recreation is proud to serve our community with programs and activities year-round, throughout our parks for all ages and abilities. We are currently accepting applications for the following Recreation Instructor opportunities:


Summer Day Camp
(67 Days)

  • Work Schedule: Average of 30 hours per week; typical schedules include shifts M-F between 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
  • Shifts may include an occasional weeknight or weekend shift to support other community recreation programs and events.
  • Facilitate a variety of recreation and camp activities for youth and families (primarily in a Day Camp setting) including outdoor activities, group games, sports, art projects, and more; provide a safe and welcoming atmosphere for youth; be a positive role model for participants, make safe and effective group management decisions.
  • Themes like Wizards & Warlocks, Archery, Fishing, Disc Golf, and more!
  • All training provided; prior experience planning and leading activities with youth is valuable.


Summer General Programs
(67 Days)

  • Work Schedule: 20-40 hours per week, depending on season and availability; schedule may vary week-to-week to include daytime, evenings, and weekends.
  • Plan and support recreation program offerings, including programs such as: pop-up play, hiking, community events, youth sport sessions, and other recreation programs.
  • All training provided; prior experience planning and leading activities is valuable.


Summer General Programs
(13.5 hours/week)

  • Work Schedule: Approximately 2-4 shifts per week up to 13.5 hours per week; schedule may vary week-to-week to include daytime, evenings, and weekends.
  • Plan and support recreation program offerings, including programs such as: pop-up play, hiking, community events, youth sport sessions, and other recreation programs.
  • All training provided; prior experience planning and leading activities is valuable.

Summary/Purpose
Recreation Instructors develop and conduct outdoor recreation programs that support Duluth Parks & Recreation's efforts to increase public understanding and awareness of recreation opportunities, foster environmental stewardship, and the appreciation, enjoyment, and utilization of our facilities and resources.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

  • Assist in planning and organizing recreational activities and special events.
  • Supervise and monitor scheduled recreational activities and special events.
  • Conduct necessary set-up and takedown of needed equipment as required prior to and after recreational activities and special events.
  • Provide a safe, fun, and supportive learning environment for all participants.
  • Contribute to evaluating recreation programs with other staff and affiliated cosponsoring agencies.
  • Assist with recreation programs; effectively communicate and engage with youth, families, adults, and the general public.
  • Effectively monitor the behavior of participants to maintain order and safety.
  • Provide exceptional customer service; answer questions effectively and appropriately, and follow-up as required.
  • Maintain control of recreation program participants while identifying individual needs.
  • Communicate with Recreation Specialist regarding concerns or questions, including safety and improvements to efficiencies and services provided.
  • Maintain and organize equipment.
  • Inspect equipment and recreation areas to ensure safety and cleanliness and report discrepancies to the division.
  • Perform onsite maintenance activities such as shoveling, sweeping, mopping, and general cleaning as needed.
  • Be an effective team member by exhibiting self-motivation, supporting other employees in handling tasks, interacting effectively and respectfully with others, showing a desire to contribute to the team effort, accepting assignments willingly, and completing tasks within agreed upon timelines.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Age Requirement
A. Must be 18 or older by date of hire.

License Requirement
A. Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license or privilege.

All final candidates must successfully complete and pass the City's pre-employment process before their first day of employment with the City.

Any applicant who has been found qualified to participate in a selection process for a position in the classified service who has reason to contest the validity or fairness of any step in the selection process may appeal to the Civil Service Board within 10 calendar days of the examination. (If the examination is an Education/Experience Review, the applicant must appeal within 10 calendar days of the closing date for accepting applications.) The notice of appeal shall be in writing, shall contain a complete statement of the matter in controversy and the relief requested, and shall be signed and dated by the appellant. The notice shall be addressed to the Civil Service Board and be delivered to the Human Resources Office. If an applicant wishes to file an appeal electronically, the notice should be sent by email to hrinformation@duluthmn.gov.
