Description

To perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties involved in parks and cemetery maintenance, including but not limited to;

mowing, line trimming, leaf blowing, installing, and maintaining irrigation systems, cleaning restrooms, use of light and heavy equipment associated with park maintenance and related work as required.

To perform routine park and cemetery maintenance duties and a variety of related tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Essential Job Duties

The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Clean and maintain public facilities and grounds in park and cemetery areas.
  • Operate and maintain small power equipment including lawn mowers, hedgers, spreaders, rototillers, line trimmers and other equipment.
  • Build and repair park benches, tables, fences, signs, and related structures.
  • Plant and maintain annual flower beds.
  • Prune and trim hedges, bushes, and other shrubbery.
  • Assist full-time Parks maintenance staff with special projects.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to those contacted in course of work.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance :

  • Operates various power tools for parks and cemetery maintenance and other projects including large and small riding mowers, push mowers, wood saws, chainsaws, leaf-blowers and weed trimmers.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of all departmental maintenance equipment.

City Organization Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Represent the Department and City to other staff and members of the public.
  • Provide quality customer service to individuals needing directions or assistance.

Supervisory Relationships :

This job has no supervisory responsibilities, although may provide leadership of community volunteers.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of :

  • Equipment and tools used in parks, cemetery open space, river, and trails maintenance.
  • Public relations principles and techniques.
  • Techniques of repairing and servicing park and cemetery facilities and grounds.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Skill in :

  • Locating and correcting defects in facilities and equipment.
  • Operating and maintaining all assigned tools, light equipment and moderate to heavy power-driven equipment.

Ability to :

  • Operate a variety of motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Deal effectively and diplomatically with the public.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Operate a computer and mobile phone device.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for successful job performance.
  • Maintain mental capacity that allows the capability of effectively interacting and communicating with others.
  • Self-motivate and adapt to changing situations.

Work Environment :

  • Work is performed in a in a variety of environments, indoors, outdoors, varied terrain, and park like settings.
  • Travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, fumes, gases, and inclement weather conditions; work in inclement weather conditions;

Physical and Mental Requirements / Activities :

  • This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of lifting / moving or force and occasional lift, move or drag 100 pounds or more while performing essential functions of the job.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education and Certification : Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Minimum Experience : One year of Parks or Cemetery related maintenance.
