This position is responsible for accurate reading and re-reading electric and water meters and assisting with the provision of customer service.
Major Duties
- Reads electric and water utility meters for commercial and residential customers
- Maintains records on standard forms to ensure proper billing
- Assists with uploading and downloading computerized meter reading devices to the computer
- Checks for dysfunctional meters and reports any defects to supervisor
- Runs re-checks on meters in question
- Performs final reading for customers requesting disconnection; turns electric and water services on for new customers
- Disconnects electric and water services to delinquent customers
- Assists in locating and uncovering lost meters
- May replace meter boxes, lids and cut-offs
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent; one (1) to two (2) years experience; possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated; equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge Required by the Position
- Knowledge of water and electric meter functions and billing methods
- Knowledge of electrical safety regulations
- Knowledge of the City electric and water systems
- Knowledge of the location of City streets and meters
- Skill in operating a hand-held meter-reading unit
- Skill in oral and written communication
- Skill in dealing with the general public
- Ability to observe meter activity accurately and record readings legibly
- Ability to make mathematical computations rapidly and accurately
Supervisory Controls:
Employees in this position follow designated routes, receive specific work instructions and refer unusual questions and requests to the supervisor. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Meter Reader Foreman.
Guidelines:
Guidelines include the National Electrical Code, City codes, policies and procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

This position consists of related meter reading and customer service tasks.

Physical Demands:
The work is typically performed with the employee intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The work is performed outdoors and in an office. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather.
