The City of Effingham Public Works Department is seeking candidates to serve as Building Official. This position reports to the City Engineer. The position is full-time, with a starting wage ranging from $74,464 - $78,458 per year, based on qualifications. The City offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a defined pension plan. Duties:
· Primarily responsible for residential, commercial, and industrial building inspections;
· Conducts construction plan reviews and maintains consistent communications with contractors and other construction professionals regarding their plans;
· Demonstrates and applies comprehensive knowledge of the International Building Code, especially pertaining to electrical, plumbing, structural, and other construction aspects of the Code;
· Enforces and maintains compliance with all building, residential, and property codes;
· Issues building, demolition, occupancy, and sign permits;
· Enforces all applicable federal, state, and local statutes/ordinances pertaining to building codes and zoning within the City of Effingham;
· Assists the City Engineer and City Planner to collaboratively support the mission of the Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals;
· Works closely with the Plumbing/Electrical Inspector, Fire Department, and other City departments on life/safety issues and the permitting process;
· Performs field inspections in response to community complaints and proactively conducts inspections pertaining to dangerous and unsafe properties and environments;
· Maintains accurate, comprehensive records and documents, and all permitting software;
· Maintains effective communications and interactions with residents and property owners;
· Promotes an environment of both formal enforcement actions and open communications with residential and commercial property owners, with the goal of achieving a high level of voluntary compliance;
· Other related duties, as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
· Associate's degree from a two-year college or university; or four (4) to five (5) years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree or higher from a university; or ten (10) years or more of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
· Certification as a Building Official or a related position;
· Knowledge of Word Office suite
