What are the responsibilities and job description for the Communication Specialist position at City of Elkins?

This position is the face and voice of a medium-sized West Virginia city with dynamic leadership and exciting projects underway and on the horizon. The City of Elkins communications specialist is responsible for all aspects of the city's communication efforts, including writing articles and blog posts, shooting and editing videos, taking photos, establishing good relationships with the press, and ensuring the public receives complete, accurate information about city projects and activities. The Communication Specialist reports to the City Clerk. Hybrid work options, including work-from-home, may be considered after incumbent has gained sufficient familiarity with the organization. This position is relatively new to City of Elkins and the new incumbent will have a lot of input and creative freedom in shaping the city's communications processes and approach.
Under general supervision, this position primarily performs tasks related to information collection and distribution. Work involves the development and promotion of concise and clear messaging and requires completing assigned tasks in a timely manner with a high level of attention to detail.
This position involves a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, serving as a point of contact with the external community and media for general City information; proactively identifying content for news articles, blog posts or other public dissemination; collaborating with public officials on project related media; maintaining the city website and social media platforms; and operating live streaming technology for meetings.
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in English, Journalism, Communications, marketing, Public Relations or other related field from four-year college or university; supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
