POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Concrete Technician DEPARTMENT: Public Works Management
POSITION CODE: 24-925 FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None EMPLOYEE CLASS: AFSCME
POSITION REPORTS TO: Director of Public Works
- Subject to post offer, pre-employment drug screen.
- Subject to post offer, pre-employment physical examination/medical history check.
- Subject to a pre-employment criminal background check.
- In accordance with 49 CFR 391.53, information regarding previous employers may be used for the purpose of investigating the applicant’s safety performance history within the previous three years. This includes general employment, accident, and drug/alcohol information.
- In accordance with 49 CFR 393.23, a Motor Vehicle Report covering the previous three years will be obtained for the purpose of investigating the applicant’s driving history.
- As a CDL driver, the employee will be required to comply with all provisions of DOT Regulation 49 CFR Parts 40 and 382, including random drug and alcohol testing.
- Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class B CDL with an acceptable driving record.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Apply hardening and sealing compounds to cure surface of concrete, and waterproof or restore surface.
- Apply muriatic acid to clean surface, and rinse with water.
- Check the forms that hold the concrete to see that they are properly constructed.
- Chip, scrape, and grind high spots, ridges, and rough projections to finish concrete, using pneumatic chisels, power grinders, or hand tools.
- Remove existing concrete using a jackhammer and clear work area of debris.
- Clean chipped areas, using wire brush, and feel and observe surface to determine if it is rough or uneven.
- Mix cement, sand, and water to produce concrete, grout, or slurry, using hoe, trowel, tamper, scraper, or concrete-mixing machine.
- Start engine, move throttles, controls, and levers to operate backhoe, skid steer, and front end loader.
- Mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.
- Monitor how the wind, heat, or cold affect the curing of the concrete throughout the entire process.
- Set the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth, and align them.
- Spread, level, and smooth concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
- Provide assistance to other departments as needed.
- Perform other duties as required.

- Unsafe areas of concrete are removed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Creation of new concrete areas is completed with proficient craftsmanship in a timely and efficient manner.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High school diploma of general education degree (GED); or six months related experience and or/training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES/LICENSES: Class B CDL upon hire.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE: Building and Construction — Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of highways and roads.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to operate a backhoe, skid steer, and front end loader.
Ability to read and interpret blue prints and other detailed drawings.
Handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Accurate and attentive to detail.
Good communications and public relations abilities.
Ability to assist and support others.
Able to operate telephone, PC, copier, and other basic business machines.
PHYSICAL & MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION
FINGER DEXTERITY: Manual dexterity sufficient to work with the fingers.
VISUAL ABILITIES: Normal vision, with or without corrective lenses.
PHYSICAL STRENGTH: PDC Level: Heavy Employee lifts/carries 50 lbs. occasionally (less than 33% of the time or 1-100 times a day). Requires a push/pull exertion of force of 100 lbs. frequently. Heavy physical activity required performing strenuous daily activities. Prolonged kneeling; frequent bending and squatting. Periodic shoveling requiring lifting from ground to waist to shoulder.
LANGUAGE/COMPREHENSION: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few variables in standardized situations.
MATHEMATICS ABILITY: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Other–Variable lunch period and breaks in coordination with other personnel.
May be required to work nights and weekends during snow and ice events, 10-12 hours.
Early morning or night time hours could be required for work that would need to be done in high traffic areas, very limited.
WORK CONDITIONS: Outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions (for instance, rain, sun, snow, wind, etc.)
Noise level: Very loud. Hearing protection required.
Other work conditions: Occasional work near moving mechanical parts.
ADVANCEMENT CRITERIA:
INTERMEDIATE
ADVANCED
4-6 years’ experience.
7 years’ experience.
Specialized vocational training or additional coursework in related field.
Associate’s Degree or equivalent in related field.
Ability to fill in for foreman on short-term basis.
Ability to fill in for foreman on an extended term basis.
Ability to fill in for Heavy Equipment Operator on short-term basis.
Valid CPR Certification.
