Job Summary
The Mechanic trainee works under immediate supervision to learn and become proficient in the technical aspects of repairing and servicing City vehicles and equipment.
Supervisory Controls
The trainee works under the direction of a Senior Mechanic while learning to perform the full scope of duties of a Mechanic through an on-the-job training program. Mechanic trainee is supervised by the Shop Supervisor who assigns and reviews work through spot-check observation, conferences, problems encountered, and overall results achieved.
Job Duties- Assists in repairs and required preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment
- Assist with the inspection and troubleshooting on equipment
- Interpret work orders and technical manuals
- Repair or replace defective parts, components or systems
- Test repaired equipment for proper performance and to ensure that the work meets specifications and legislated regulations
- Assists to maintain shop tools and equipment.
- Drives service truck to pick up parts and supplies.
- Maintains service truck; changes oil, logs in miles, etc.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Required by the Position
- *Knowledge of city road system.
- Reading skills to meters and gauges.
- Math skills to check tire pressure and properly balance tires.
- Writing skills to maintain mileage log and complete work orders.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, vendors and supervisors.
- Ability to work independently without close supervision
- Ability to operate a vehicle in a safe manner.
- Ability to lift weight up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to handle, remove, repair and change large and small tires

Physical Demands/Work Environment
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in a shop or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

1. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in tire repair and/or vehicle maintenance preferred.
2. Possess a valid Alabama driver’s license.
3. Must meet City of Enterprise physical standards which include drug and alcohol testing.
