What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic II position at City of Garden City (KS)?
This position performs skilled maintenance and repair of City-owned vehicles and equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This includes servicing Street Department vehicles, trucks, and equipment and/or Police Department vehicles and specialized equipment. Work also includes preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems, and completing repairs in accordance with safety standards, manufacturer specifications, and departmental procedures.
Education, Certification and Experience: High school diploma or GED. Vocational school course work or diploma preferred. Two or more years mechanical experience required. Valid Kansas driver's license required. A Kansas Class B CDL driver’s license is required or must obtain one within 6 months. Applicant must make available drug testing history and pass drug test.Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed indoors. Work may also be performed outdoors, i.e. moderate to extreme cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust, and dry conditions.
Surfaces: Includes, but not limited to concrete, dirt, sand, gravel, asphalt, grass and wood.
Physical Characteristics: Includes, but not limited to, bend, kneel, push, pull, reach, hold, stand, walk, jump, sit, drive, and ability to lift up to 100 pounds and frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing 75-100 pounds.
- Performs general repair work on light and heavy vehicles and equipment.
- Assists employees in the proper operations of vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains all equipment maintenance records and reports.
- Submits log sheets on a daily basis.
- Performs routine electrical work on vehicles and equipment including but not limited to batteries and terminals, lights, alternators and starters.
- Fabrication repair (welding and cutting) of equipment as necessary.
- Maintains equipment, vehicles, facilities, and all required tools and supplies.
- Cleans shop area, bathrooms, windows, etc. including but not limited to the Fleet Maintenance Shop.
- Services vehicles and equipment and assists all mechanics as needed.
- Required "on call" duty, including storm call outs.
- Subject to the Departments Random Drug/Alcohol testing program.
- Performs any other duties as assigned as long as it is non-certified.
