Description

The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Solid Waste Driver with the Solid Waste Department. This position is responsible for work activities in the Solid Waste Department which includes, but not limited to driving a packer or recycling truck on assigned routes, assisting laborers in loading refuse or recyclables as required.

Works under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of the Solid Waste Division.

Examples of Duties

  • Operates packer trucks and recycling trucks on established route as assigned.
  • Collects and transports refuse or recyclable to disposal landfill or the Recycle Center.
  • Bales and loads materials for shipment according to recycling standard and completes proper paperwork.
  • Maintains records involving vehicle maintenance and daily activities.
  • Follows Federal and State safety rules and procedures at all times.
  • Maintains equipment, vehicles, tools, supplies, facilities, and grounds.
  • Handles recyclable bales weighing up to 2,000 lbs.
  • Applies chemicals related to the department, using proper safety procedures.
  • Follows safety policies and practices as established by Department Head.
  • Subject to the Departments Random Drug / Alcohol testing program.
  • Required - Kansas CDL Driver's License.
  • May act as a work leader at the discretion of the Foreman.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Skills in driving and operating refuse and recycling vehicles. Knowledge of occupational hazards, and safety practices and procedures.

Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to perform physical labor under varying weather conditions.

Ability to communicate with City employees and the general public.

Education, Certification and Experience : One (1) year experience in driving and operating heavy equipment. Valid Driver's License required.

Must obtain a Kansas Driver's License within 60 days of establishing residency. Must obtain valid Kansas Class B CDL Driver's License within first 6 months.

Applicant must make available drug testing history and pass drug test.

Supplemental Information

Environment : Work is performed in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed outdoors, i.e. moderate to extreme cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust, and dry conditions.

Surfaces : Includes, but not limited to dirt, sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt, grass and wood.

Physical Characteristics : Includes, but not limited to, bend, kneel, push, pull, reach, hold, stand, walk, jump, sit, drive, and ability to lift up to 26-50 pounds and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
