PAY GRADE: 1 (STARTING PAY $12.00 PER HOUR)
The City of Gulf Breeze Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to the provision of superior parks and facilities; diverse leisure opportunities; and attractive thoroughfares that serve to enhance the quality of life of our residents, our neighbors and our guests. Our facilities include a 44,000 square foot community center; a comprehensive athletic complex and tennis facility; disc golf; a skate park; multiple community parks, fishing piers, boardwalks, picnic facilities, public beaches, boat launches; and several natures preserves and trails… encompassing over 500 acres of land.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Recreation Program Supervisor, this position serves as an After-school Recreation Assistant for the program serving middle school aged students and is responsible for the implementation and organization of activities. This position typically works after-school hours but may be called in to work additional hours based on schedules as approved by the Director of Parks and Recreation.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

· Implement and provide organization of leisure time activities and events that will engage local middle school students, voluntarily, during the hours of 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday, when public schools are in session.
· Responsible for the supervision and support of all after-school program participants.
· Monitor and correct participant behavior, communicate and document all incidents to the Recreation Program Supervisor.
· Maintain equipment and supplies.
· Recommend equipment and supply purchases necessary for service delivery.
· Prepare daily activities for assigned age group.
· Monitor and supply restrooms as needed.
· Return all equipment (balls, chairs, tables, etc.) to its designated storage location.
· Clean and organize all areas utilized during after-school program hours.
· Work together to plan special events.
· Additional duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
· Knowledge of the fundamentals of games, sports, athletics, and recreation.
· Knowledge of the basic skills in working with children and youth.
· Knowledge of the types of facilities, materials, and supplies required to carry out recreation activities.
· Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with the public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
· This position involves tasks related to recreation; physical education, field trips, group games, etc.
· This position routinely interacts with co-workers; recreation participants, individually and in groups.
· Work is performed with intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, walking and running.
· Must be able to frequently lift heavy objects when needed.
EDUCATION AND JOB EXPERIENCE
· Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
· Related experience in parks and recreation and/or working with youth
