What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic II position at City of Hammond?
Under the direct supervision of the Fleet Manager, the Heavy Equipment
Mechanic performs various skilled task at a journeymen’s level in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy gasoline and diesel driven automotive and other heavy mechanical equipment, and performs related work as required. The incumbent exercises technical independence in determining work methods and procedures and receives assignments orally or through written instructions which may be accompanied by sketches or diagrams. Work is reviewed by immediate supervisor through inspections and discussions.General:
Analyzes and inspects automotive or mechanical equipment to diagnose defects.
Analyze malfunctions and perform general overhaul, tune-up and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, diesel engines, mowers and automotive or mechanical equipment.
Visit worksites to repair larger machinery, such as backhoes, tractors etc.
Replaces necessary units and parts such as gears, bearings, fuel, and exhaust components.
Inspects, repairs, overhauls, and assembles automotive electrical equipment,
such as generators, distributors, ignitions, and starters.
Lubricate a wide variety of parts and materials used in each job, and inspects and tests repaired equipment.
Specific:
Diagnose, repair and install hydraulic pumps and controls
Repair and maintain heavy machinery components such as transmissions, electrical systems, and engines. Verifying the optimal performance of brakes, fuel lines, and various systems.Acceptable Training and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years progressive journeyman experience as an automotive mechanic and at least two (2) letters of recommendation pertaining to quality of work; AND
Completion (ASE) of certification from an accredited technical institute or trade school with periodic updates in: Engine Repair, Brakes, and one (1) of the following: Diesel Engines, Electrical Systems, Engine Performance, or Heating and Air Conditioning, and two (2) years’ of experience.

Certificates and/or Licenses:
The required certification, AND
Possession of a valid Louisiana driver’s license with a good driving record.
NOTE: Loss of Louisiana’s license and/or certification is cause for demotion or termination.
