Function
- Demonstrates positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public
- Control all electronic doors, gates, locks, etc.
- Acts as a security checkpoint for persons wanting access to different sections within the facility
- Prevents access of unauthorized persons inside the premises
- Ensure all doors, locks, keys and equipment are operational
- Communicates with deputies, supervisors, employees
- Control inmate movement throughout the facility
- Control the distribution of keys, ensuring the chit system is utilized
- Remain on post until properly relieved-never leave the post unattended
- Ensure the Control Center door is secured at all times, utilizing the window for documents
- Annotate all entries of releases, transports, meals, committals, arrivals, departures, etc. in the log
- Log all emergency telephone messages and report them to the supervisor
- Distribute paperwork to appropriate personnel and units
- Properly and efficiently checks all personnel and vehicles for identity prior to entry
- Supervises inmate activities
- Maintains log of daily inmate activities
- Ensures that inmates are fed
- Responsible for observing the physical and mental condition of all inmates and documenting on the appropriate logs
- Responsible to report any behaviors (mental or physical) that may indicate a suicidal attempt to the supervisory staff and medical and / or mental health personnel
- Consults with medical personnel regarding the inmate's health to verify an inmate's illness and identify any necessary precautions
- Conduct security checks of all doors and windows for proper functioning
- Monitor cameras, audio alarms, door alarms, fire alarms, etc. and take appropriate action in the event of an incident
- Monitors inmate movement and activities
- Inventories and issues facility keys, vehicle keys, radios, equipment, etc.
- Adheres to all policies, procedures, guidelines, and all directives of the office
- Dependable and meets acceptable attendance requirements at all times
- Protects confidential information by preventing unauthorized released, both verbally and in writing
- Follows all Federal, State, and Local laws
- Performs any other task as required

Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience is equivalent to graduation from high school. Must obtain Dispatch certification or jail officer certification through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Service (VDCJS) prior to hire

Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls, run, bend, twist, reach, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas; sit for prolonged periods of time; move / push / pull, or lift heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs.; Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies. Requires annual physical and physical agility test; May require the operation of a firearm and standard office equipment.
