The Public Works Department Technician II - Facility Maintenance is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $18.64 - $21.44 per hour (equivalent to $38,771 - $44,595 annually); however, an exact salary will be determined in compliance with City Policy Section 3: Compensation. Applicants who do not meet the qualifications for the Technician II level may be considered for another level within the department at an annual rate commensurate with applicant qualifications.
Preferred Hiring Ranges:
- Journeyman: $16.60 - $19.09 per hour (equivalent to $34,528 - $39,707 annually)
- Technician I: $17.59 - $20.23 per hour (equivalent to $36,587 - $42,078 annually)
As the Technician II, you'll:
- Perform a wide variety of cleaning and maintenance duties for various city facilities in the downtown area and pavilion;
- Maintain downtown areas by: cleaning, sweeping and/or pressure washing parking areas, sidewalks, pavilion, parking deck stairwells, windows and drains, etc.; installing signs in parking decks; cleaning oil spills, dead animals and human and bird excretions from the downtown/parking areas; trimming brush around parking decks and Blacks Run; picking up leaves; emptying and cleaning trashcans and replacing trash bags; picking up trash and broken glass from parking areas and sidewalks and assisting with cleaning graffiti throughout the City;
- Maintain spring houses and fountains downtown and at the Hardesty Higgins House by cleaning and adding proper chlorine amounts to maintain water quality;
- Perform weed control by pulling weeds from sidewalks and flower beds;
- Perform basic wiring and maintain electrical components in parking decks, spring houses, and downtown areas by changing bulbs, lenses, sockets, switches, and ballasts for lights;
- Assist at the Hardesty Higgins House by changing heating/air conditioning filters, changing lights, cleaning the patio, and other maintenance and cleaning duties;
- Open and clean Denton Park and waterfall daily, including removing leaves and snow, as needed;
- Operate a small or large street sweeper, loader, bucket truck, and other medium to large motorized equipment;
- Monitor newspaper and real estate stands in downtown area for proper location;
- Represent the City positively to citizens and downtown business personnel through the coordination with other departments, professional office personnel, and downtown businesses to keep areas clean for daily patronage;
- Use good judgment regarding frequency of task completion to maintain a clean, presentable downtown area for daily patronage;
- Monitor downtown area, decks, and other work areas for maintenance needed and drainage issues;
- Collect municipal solid waste, recyclables, and trash by moving cans and containers placed for collection and dumping into trucks and operating hydraulic mechanisms for compressing and dumping refuse;
- Clean and prepare downtown sidewalks, lots, flagpoles, and other areas before, during, and after special events (parades, First Night, etc.), including removing signs after events;
- Ensures public and work zone safety by setting up cones, barricades, and signs to create detours during routine maintenance, special events, emergency situations, and for tour buses downtown and by performing as a traffic flagger;
- Perform automotive and equipment preventive maintenance and minor repairs;
- Perform snow and ice removal by operating a dump truck with snow plow and salt spreader attachments and other equipment;
- Complete required work orders and maintain accurate documentation of work performed;
- Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints effectively, courteously, and tactfully;
- Respond to off-hour emergencies as required.
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to:
- High school diploma or GED; and
- Two years full-time experience in a similar cleaning/maintenance position or in the operation and maintenance of a street sweeper with at least one year performing duties comparable to those of a City of Harrisonburg Technician I – Facility Maintenance; or
- One year full-time employment by the City of Harrisonburg as a Technician I – Facility Maintenance may be used to meet the combination of education and experience requirement stated above.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Possession of current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with air brakes at time of hire.
- Possession of current Virginia Department of Transportation Intermediate Work Zone Safety Certification within six months of hire date or as class scheduling permits.
- Availability to respond to off-hour emergencies as required.
