Job Purpose
Under direction of the City Attorney and Assistant City Attorney, employs knowledge of federal, state, and local laws to assist in providing a variety of professional legal services essential to the effective operation of Municipal government. Essential Duties
These job functions are the essential duties of the position and are not all-inclusive of all the duties the incumbent may be assigned.
Duty 1: Advising City Officials and Staff
40% Time
Essential
Tasks:
? Assist in advising city commissioners, city manager, and staff on the legality of proposed actions
? Assist in training city commissioners and staff on statutes, ordinances, and other authorities applicable to their duties
? On occasion, serve as legal advisor and parliamentarian at board meetings
Duty 2: Legal Document Drafting
40% Time
Essential
Tasks:
? Draft pleadings, briefs, motions, orders, and other documents necessary to civil and criminal litigation
? Assist in the drafting of ordinances, resolutions, deeds, releases, contracts, and other documents
? Assist in the drafting of legal opinions that guide the city commission, city manager, and staff
Duty 3: Litigation
20% Time

Tasks:
? Assist other staff attorneys in litigating civil actions filed against the city
? Assist in the negotiation and settlement of legal disputes
? Prosecute misdemeanor criminal offenses and code enforcement actions Work Schedule
Daily Shift: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Related to this Position: - Knowledge of:
Montana statutes and local codes and regulations applicable to local government operations
Rules of Evidence and Rules of Civil Procedure
Methods of legal research and writing
Skill or ability to:
Assist in the litigation of civil cases
Prosecute criminal cases with little to no oversight
Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing
Operate modern office equipment and Microsoft Office applications
License and/or Certificate Requirements
Membership in the Montana State Bar and license to practice law in the State and Federal Courts is required. Must possess a valid driver"s license with acceptable driving record at the time of hire and, if not already licensed in Montana, obtain a valid Montana driver"s license within six months of hire. Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Training):
This position requires a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school. Experience in criminal law and procedures, local government and land use law is preferred. Other relevant combinations of work experience may be evaluated on an individual basis. Application Special Instructions
