All applicants are subject to a background check. This position is responsible for performing construction duties in the maintenance of city buildings and facilities.

Major Duties

Major Duties

  • Maintains daily log; documents time, equipment, and supplies used on each project.

  • Installs and repairs receptacles, switches, and light fixtures, including fluorescent ballasts and tubes, and incandescent bulbs.

  • Maintains records of all purchases.
  • Receives daily work orders; prioritizes tasks; verifies equipment needs.
  • Services and repairs indoor and outdoor light fixtures.
  • Performs monthly HVAC equipment maintenance and service.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs.
  • Installs and repairs locks, door stops and door knobs.
  • Checks fire extinguishers on a monthly basis.
  • Moves furniture for various departments.
  • Replaces, repairs and constructs mail boxes, fences, and dumpster box enclosures.
  • Repairs small roof leaks; cleans and flushes gutters; replaces broken glass; removes graffiti; paints city buildings.
  • Assists with the preparation of downtown area for special events.
  • Maintains department vehicle.
  • Responds to after hours emergencies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Knowledge of city and departmental policies related to building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of basic carpentry and plumbing installation, repair and maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of electrical and heating and air conditioning repair and maintenance
  • procedures.
  • Skill in basic carpentry and masonry techniques.
  • Skill in the operation of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in basic building maintenance techniques.
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Skill in performing preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee in this position to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently/repeatedly required to stand; walk; use hands and exert forces needed to handle various types and sizes of tools, equipment and objects; reach with hands and arms and perform elevated work for periods of time; climb ladders and balance; climb into vehicles and equipment; stoop; kneel; half-kneel; squat; crouch; or crawl; and talk; or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift, push, pull and/or move more than 100 pounds. An employee in this position will have successfully passed a "Functional Prework Screen" administered by a professional and impartial third party specialist.

SAFETY SENSITIVE: This position has been identified as safety-sensitive. The employee in this position will be part of a random drug testing pool. The methodology for choosing the random test subjects is handled by an outside, impartial, third party vendor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Electrical Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The work is spot-checked completion for accuracy, compliance with procedures, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include city ordinances and building codes, department policies and procedures, and work orders. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related building maintenance and construction duties. The diversity of task performed contributes to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to perform building construction and maintenance duties. Successful performance provides safe and attractive buildings for city employees.
