What are the responsibilities and job description for the Geographic Information System Intern position at City of Hollywood, Florida?
This unpaid internship with the City of Hollywood presents a unique opportunity for students to engage with key stakeholders in the Development Services Department, working under the guidance of the Principal Planner – GIS to perform essential GIS functions in a municipal government setting. The internship allows the intern(s) to express their GIS creativity, learn from an experienced professional, and help to build out a robust GI system for one of the largest cities in South Florida.
The Planning and Urban Design Division oversees the encompassing planning process for a built environment in a growing and changing urban landscape, the cultural melting pot of South Florida. This Division has programs and applications for historical and long-range planning, development, zoning, urban design and public art, and GIS and growth management, and excellent customer service. This position, and the Departmental GIS Program, is interdivisional, and we work between Planning and Urban Design, Engineering, Transportation, and Mobility, and Building.
The intern(s) will be responsible for:
· Reporting directly to the Principal Planner – GIS
· Gathering and creating datasets for analyses
· Creating GIS models for forecasting
· Participating in studies directed by the Principal Planner – GIS
· Standardizing data across divisions
· Contribute to building Story Maps, web maps and web applications
· Contribute to a live development mapping interdivisional endeavor
· Utilizing 3D data
The intern(s) will be receiving training, knowledge, and experience in:
· Municipal-level government workings
· Urban planning, urban social, engineering, and transportation applications of GIS
· Data gathering and manipulation
· Database management
· Forecasting and growth management analytics and insights
· Story maps, web maps, web applications, 3D data manipulation
· Automation and coding through Python and SQL
· First-hand accounts of local government processes, meetings, and interactions as they pertain to the development process
This internship is ideal for students who seek to expand their skillset with GIS for urban social and real estate applications of GIS under the guidance of a seasoned GIS manager with theoretical/academic and public/private experience. This internship is open to in-person (City Hall of Hollywood, Florida) and remote work. The internship is unpaid. We have no control over the pay for this position.
Applicants should have at a minimum beginner GIS experience (2-3000 level coursework), but advanced (upper-division) or graduate-level experience is preferred. Remote interns must have their own access to ArcGIS through their university and their own computers. In-person applicants will be given a workspace and resources.
