POSITION PROFILE
The Assistant Planner is an entry-level position that requires a highly motivated individual to assist in the routine tasks and review of development ordinances for compliance. He/she will devote a significant amount of time on basic planning responsibilities, related routine administrative or regulatory tasks, and assisting other staff on planning projects of varying complexity. Prepares technical presentations by collecting and compiling statistical and graphical information from broad and varied sources. Works closely with residents, community stakeholders and community on basic planning programs, requirements, and ordinances. Provides information assistance to community stakeholders and the public. Works in a team environment.

Requires basic knowledge of planning principles and practices. Knowledge of this level is typically obtained through a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Geography, Public Policy or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
No experience required. Preference will be given to candidates who has working knowledge:

General Responsibilities:
- Reviews, or assists in reviewing and processing of, specific planning programs, regulations, or ordinances including Special Minimum Building Line (Sec. 42-170), Special Minimum Lot Size (Sec. 42-197), Prohibited Yard Parking (Sec. 28-303), Honorary Street Markers, or others as they may arise.
- Assists in the development, update, or implementation of planning studies and/or community driven action plans. Programs include Complete Communities, Neighborhood Resilience Planning, or other initiatives as they may arise.
- Compiles, creates, maintains, and analyzes data that support planning and operational projects.
- Assists in writing technical reports, planning documents, and correspondence.
- Assists in producing maps, site plans, demographic materials, and other graphical representations of data of varying complexity.
- Assists in analyzing site plans, plat maps, title reports, surveys, technical reports, local ordinances, policies, laws, and/or regulations.
- Works closely with the public on planning programs in one or more communities. Demonstrates cultural awareness and adeptness in interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Assists in preparing presentations for governmental bodies and the public.
- Performs other duties as assigned of similar nature and level.
