What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lawyer-Law Clerk Commercial Court position at City of Indianapolis and Marion County?
The Law Clerk will assist in the handling of commercial cases as directed by the Court in order to further the efficient, predictable resolution of business and commercial law disputes in Indiana. The Lawyer-Law Clerk shall assist with research, drafting, and other necessary work to maintain the operation of the Court as assigned.
Lawyer-Law Clerks are governed by certain ethical guidelines that generally prohibit the practice of law and significantly restrict the ability to engage in pro bono legal representation and outside employment. Law clerks are also prohibited from engaging in any political activities, whether partisan or nonpartisan, subject to Canon 4 of the Indiana Code of Judicial Conduct.

Beginning Salary: $69,000.00 - $75,0000
Benefits: Medical, dental and vision options are available- 3 tiers of per check costs. INPERS is the retirement option that the County funds. $50k life insurance, AD&D and LTD are paid by the County for the employee. Paid time off and holidays. Free Continuing Education provided.
Marion County residency is required within six months from the date of hire.

- Conduct research and writing at the direction of the Judge, utilizing automated library services such as Westlaw and LexisNexis.
- Assist the Judge with preparing bench memoranda, drafting orders and petitions, proofreading the Judge's orders and opinions, and verifying citations.
- Assist with the effective management of the court operations. This includes the use of Odyssey, communicating with counsel regarding case management and procedures, tracking of case progress, and any other duties assigned by the Court.
- Communicate with pod/team workers to ensure that orders are updated efficiently and correctly.
- Perform these and other duties as needed and assigned with good character, maturity, and willingness to work extended hours when necessary.
Strong candidates for the position will possess additional characteristics among the following:
- class rank in the top quarter of the graduating law school class;
- staff on law review, journal, or other significant legal writing experience;
- the equivalent of one full year of legal experience through employment, internships, and/or externships;
- excellent skills in research, writing, proofreading, communication, and source and cite checking (including use of proper Bluebook form);
- an ability and willingness to work collegially with others and to maintain confidentiality.
