OBJECTIVE:
Under general supervision and guidance of the Ice Arena Supervisor (Softball Manager) and Softball Supervisor on duty, the Softball Umpire understands the rules of adult softball and uses their best judgement to make calls during game play and enforce league rules and policies as set by the Recreation Division.  Adult softball leagues are played at Dawson Field from May/June through August, Sunday through Friday evenings.  
 
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to:  Ice Arena Supervisor (Softball Supervisor);
 
Works with seasonal employees regularly and communicates with other Recreation Division staff, customers and the general public.
 
Each game officiated will equal 1 hour of pay, up to 2 - 4 games a night. 
 ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 

  1. Umpires assigned games.
  2. Familiarizes self with league rules and ASA rules.
  3. Enforces the rules and regulations of the game fairly and consistently.
  4. Understands and enforces the player code of conduct.
  5. Maintains order on the field and ejects players when necessary.
  6. Monitors game playing to ensure the game is played within the time limits.
  7. Operates the scoreboard and inputs strikes, balls, inning, and runs by means of handheld controller. 
  8. Ensure COVID-19 prevention and safety protocols are followed, including, but not          limited, to sanitizing equipment, social distancing, and mask wearing as required.
  9. Reports any issues to Supervisor.
OTHER DUTIES:
  1.  Assists Supervisor with removing bases as needed.
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to perform the essential duties of the position.
 
Education, Certifications and Experience: 
  1. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  2. Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications desired
  3. Prefer previous experience in umpiring.
Knowledge of:
  1. Knowledge of softball fundamentals and ASA rules
Ability to: 
  1. Be motivated and dependable.
  2. Ability to be fair and consistent with rule enforcement and play calling.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively, both in verbal and written form and to follow verbal and written instructions. 
  4. Ability to follow City/Division policies, work independently and make sound decisions.
  5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, staff, players and patrons.
  6. Ability to work with minimal supervision and within the boundaries of responsibility.
  7. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  8. Maintain a positive behavior and professional demeanor at all times; address resident and customer concerns in a helpful, courteous manner.
  9. Ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals.
  10. Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor.
PHYSICAL FACTORS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by any an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  
 
1.   Work will take place in an outdoor environment and varying types of weather, including
      possibility of high heat and humidity.
2.   Working conditions involve occasional exposure to dirt, dust, and moisture.
3.   Perform clean-up duties, which may include, but not limited to:
      Semi-reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, turning, 
      and lying on stomach and/or back.  
4.   Must be able to sit or stand and move for long periods of time, up to 4 hours.
5.   See and observe all sections of an assigned area of responsibility, with or without  
      reasonable accommodation.
