OBJECTIVE:
Under general supervision and guidance of the Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Supervisor and or Aquatics Supervisor on duty and with the guidance of the Recreation Programmer, Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of pool patrons through effective pool surveillance, scanning, rule enforcement and responding to emergencies.

RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Aquatics Supervisor and/or Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Supervisor; Recreation Programmer

Works with seasonal employees on a regular basis and communicates with other division employees, professional staff, pool patrons, and the public.
Individual will work at both Rockport and Palmer Pools.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Maintains a presence with proper guard apparel and equipment.
  • Provides for safety of the public by maintaining an alert and ready position while actively scanning and is prepared to act in an emergency.
  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in identified zones.
  • Understands and able to demonstrate proper water safety principles.
  • Provides the correct emergency response care and treatment.
  • Follows proper guard rotation procedures.
  • Ensures rule enforcement in a polite, firm, and consistent manner.
  • Follows and enforces the policies and procedures outlined in the Aquatics Manual.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the facility’s Emergency Action Plan.
  • Evaluates swimmer competency during daily deep-water tests and records status.
  • Attends and participates in all mandatory staff and facility trainings.
  • Completes all daily and assigned cleaning tasks.
OTHER DUTIES:
  • Report issues to Head Guard/Supervisor and or Aquatics Supervisor (on duty) and assists in writing Problem Reports.
  • Log appropriate training and in-service hours.
  • Perform a daily facility safety check and reports any hazards or issues to Head Guard/Aquatics Supervisor on duty.
  • Assist with maintenance, cleaning and general care of facility, pool deck, locker rooms and equipment.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed.
  • Assists with pool activities and concession stand when needed.
  • May be required to teach swimming lessons upon receiving in-house training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications

RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum education and experience required to perform essential duties of the position.

Education, Certifications and Experience:

  • Must be 15 years of age or older.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification with First Aid, CPR/AED required and/or willing to obtain.
Knowledge of:
  • Water safety principle.
Skill in:
  • Providing necessary emergency care within the scope of the ARC Lifeguarding certificate.
Ability to:
  • Motivated, dependable, vigilant, patient, and able to maintain discipline and a safe swimming environment for the public.
  • Follow city/department/division policies, work independently, and make sound decisions.
  • Communicate effectively, both in verbal and written form and to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, department professionals, staff, customers, and the public.
  • Work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Understand, follow and perform duties as required of an Emergency Action Plan and to swim 500 yards.
  • Positive and professional at all times, and address customer concerns in a helpful, courteous manner.
  • Work effectively as part of a team.
  • Interact with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor.

Supplemental Information

EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS AND MACHINES:
Equipment used includes, but not limited to whistle, rescue tube, backboard, AED, first aid/CPR supplies.

PHYSICAL FACTORS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by any an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must have the physical ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Work will take place in an outdoor environment and varying types of weather, including possibility of high heat and humidity and cold air and chilly water.
  • Working conditions involve occasional exposure to dirt, dust, and moisture.
  • Perform various activities, which may include, but not limited to: Semi-reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, turning, and lying on stomach and/or back.
  • Must be able to sit or stand and move for long periods of time.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned area of responsibility.
