We’re looking for an experienced Equipment Operator A to support the City of Kingman's water system construction, maintenance, and repair activities. This role operates complex medium- to heavy-duty equipment, supports water system repairs and emergency response, and helps ensure work is completed safely and efficiently. The position works under the direction of Utilities leadership and plays a key role in maintaining reliable water service for the community.

About You

You’re a skilled equipment operator who takes safety seriously and understands the responsibility that comes with operating complex machinery. You’re comfortable working outdoors, responding to emergencies, and coordinating with crew members to get the job done right. You communicate clearly, follow procedures, and take pride in reliable, high-quality work.

No CDL? No problem.

This position requires a Class A CDL, but applicants without one are still encouraged to apply. The City of Kingman partners with local training providers to offer paid CDL training, and many candidates qualify for full tuition coverage through AZ@Work. Once you graduate from the Driving Academy and obtain the appropriate class of commercial driver’s license and any required endorsements, you will begin paid, on-the-job training during your six (6) month introductory period.

  • May fill position as an Equipment Operator B, depending on qualifications.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Four (4) years of experience operating medium and heavy equipment, with at least two (2) years related to utility or street systems, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A, or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Flagging Certification.
  • Ability to obtain required NIMS training based on assignment.
  • Knowledge of water system construction, Blue Stake requirements, work zone traffic control, and safe equipment operation.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work in varying weather conditions.

Operate & Maintain Equipment (40%): Operate complex medium- and heavy-duty equipment used in water system construction and maintenance, including equipment requiring advanced skill and coordination. Perform pre- and post-trip inspections, routine cleaning, and preventive maintenance, and report needed repairs.

Water System Construction & Repair (30%): Repair and maintain water transmission mains, distribution lines, pumps, meters, and related infrastructure. Respond to emergency water main breaks and service interruptions, complete work orders, investigate water-related complaints, and restore service as efficiently as possible.

Job Site Safety & Traffic Control (20%): Set up and remove barricades, cones, and warning signs; assist with traffic control and flagging; follow Blue Stake laws; and ensure work zones comply with safety standards and traffic regulations. Assist with cleanup at accidents, spills, and emergency situations.

Customer Service & Crew Support (10%): Provide professional customer service to residents and internal partners, give direction to ground crews as needed, assist other divisions with water-related work, and support team operations during routine and emergency assignments.
