What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Camp Director - 2025 Summer Camp position at City of Kyle?
Under the direction of the Recreation Manager and Recreation Coordinator, supervises the on-site delivery of the Day Camp program in an elementary and middle school setting. Supervises both camp staff and children, using good management techniques; ensures a safe environment in the school, and encourages good health and safety practices; provide children with a variety of enriching experiences, with a good balance between free choice and planned curriculum activities: indoor and outdoor play, sports and games, arts and crafts, field trips, and more.
Kyle 2025 Summer Camp will be a 9-week camp from May 27th until August 1st, 2025, Monday – Friday 7:30 am – 5:45 pm. The camp allows the ages of entering 1st grade to entering 9th grade. The Kyle Camp is an indoor and outdoor camp filled with tons of impressive active activities, water games, and crafts.
While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; walk; use hands to manage or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee may be routinely required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Work may routinely require the employee to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This job requires the individual to frequently work outdoors and indoors in a variety of environmental conditions, including elevated temperatures, humidity, moisture, and distracting noises. An individual who poses a direct threat to the health and safety of himself/herself or others in the workplace will be deemed not qualified for this position. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

- Plans, coordinates, and supervises programs and activities for the Day Camp program with the Recreation Coordinator.
- Plan daily activities utilizing available resources and materials, and ensuring staff have clear instructions.
- Provide directions for camp counselors, and head counselors, as well as ensure compliance with required policies, procedures, and regulations, documenting and addressing issues as needed with staff.
- Work with Recreation Coordinator to determine work procedures, prepare work schedules, and expedite workflow; study and standardize procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
- Collect and maintain camper, staff, and field trip records.
- Ensure parents and staff receive schedules, and reminders in a timely and organized manner.
- Address behavior, safety, and health issues with parents in a respectful and professional manner, regarding camp attendees.
- Attend all required meetings, training, and in-services brought forth by the Recreation Coordinator, and Recreation Manager.
- Maintain positive interpersonal relations among everyone involved in the Day Camp program, including children, parents, school staff, camp counselors, Recreation Coordinator and Recreation Manager.
- Maintain related records and forms for programs and personnel at the Day Camps; prepares and verifies attendance and accident/incident reports and submits to the Recreation Coordinator in a timely manner; process paperwork completed, in an accurate and timely manner.
- Performs all other duties as duly assigned by the Recreation Coordinator.
- Must be at least 21 years of age or older and have graduated from high school or obtained a GED equivalent.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ professional experience in childcare and/or youth recreation programs is required.
- Enrollment (graduate preferred) in an accredited two or four-year college or university with a degree in Recreation, Education, Human Development, Child Development, or other related field or two or more years of professional related experience in childcare, recreation, or other related areas.
- At least one (1) year of supervisory experience is required.
- OR any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered, excluding the certifications.
- You must possess or be able to obtain certifications in Adult and Child CPR & Standard First Aid.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas Driver’s License.
- Preferred previous experience in Kyle Summer Camp or Spring Break Camp programs.
- Knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations, and techniques used at the Day Camps.
- Knowledge of child development, what to expect of children in different situations, and group management techniques.
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of paid staff and volunteers.
- Ability to remain calm and act resourcefully in an emergency and in stressful situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Skill in monitoring/assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
