What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Control Technician - Public Works position at City of Lakeland, Civil Service?
This is semi-skilled work in roadway vehicular traffic control. An incumbent is responsible for calculating and placing traffic control devices and barricades in accordance with “Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards and regulations. Employee is responsible for the safety of the public and construction workers within the traffic control zone. Work is reviewed by a supervisor during progress and upon completion to maintain performance according to established standards.

- Flags at road construction/right-of-way work sites in all types of weather.
- Controls the direction of traffic control patterns and places signs and barricades in compliance with MUTCD.
- Maintains tools, signs, and related equipment in serviceable condition.
- Operations of traffic control trucks, generators, and trailer mounted arrow boards.
- Performs vehicle inspection daily.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position is Mission Critical.
- When not performing traffic control responsibilities, technician may perform other job duties including, but not limited to, area maintenance (mow/weed eat) right of way.
- Performs related work as required.
- High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
- Must be 18 years of age by date of hire.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must maintain a valid telephone number.
- Must obtain traffic control Intermediate certification within six months of employment.
- Must be able to obtain Class “A” or “B” CDL with appropriate endorsements within six months of employment.
- Knowledge of hand tools, portable generators, and related equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with this type of work.
- Ability to communicate on City radio.
- Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to read and use maps and City directions.
- Ability to operate various equipment associated with the work.
- Ability to work with minimal direct supervision.
- Requires work that involves climbing up/down stairs, bending, walking/standing for prolonged periods, bending, twisting, and exerting up to 100 pounds of force regularly.
- The job risks exposure to working hours both day/night, wet, humid, hot/cold, bright/dim light, traffic, heights, dust, and pollen.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, field vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
