City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department is looking for a Swim Instructor. This position is responsible for providing a safe, enjoyable experience for the public by providing Starfish Swimming swim lessons and maintaining a clean presentation of both the Hunter Park Pool and Alfreda Schmidt Southside Community Center and Pool.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Attend all pre-season training sessions, both in person and online.
  • Consistently and politely enforce city policies, rules, regulations, and ordinances governing the conduct of person using the swimming facility.
  • Attend all staff trainings and meetings through the season, including two (2) hours of required in-service training per month.
  • Begin and end all swim lessons on time.
  • Report observed or potential physical hazards and unsafe conditions at the pool to the Pool Manger on duty.
  • Contact Pool Manger or Aquatics Coordinator if assistance in maintaining discipline of participants is needed.
  • Size any person in need of a life jacket correctly, record the check out, ensure there is collateral for the checkout of the life jacket, and educate patrons on lifejacket rules.
  • Provide first aid to patrons and staff members as needed. Report everything, either on an accident/incident form, first aid log, or employee accident/incident form; be sure you know which form to use for every incident.
  • Report first aid supply shortages to the pool manager or Aquatics Coordinator.
  • Know all EAPs for the pool and building.
  • Collect all supplies needed for classes and return all supplies to their proper storage place.
  • Complete skill sheets/attendance for each student, each class.
  • Regularly communicate with students and/or parents/guardians with progress in class.
  • Complete end of the session certificates before the end of the session
  • Report all school/level statuses at the beginning and end of the session.
  • Report observed or potential physical hazards and unsafe conditions at the pool to the Pool Manager on duty.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Requirements include:

  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Must be able to swim 25 yards of each: front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, butterfly (preferred), and breaststroke (preferred).
  • Tread water for 1 minute
  • Sit, stand, and/or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Lift 150 pounds, with assistance
  • Work in extreme heat and extreme cold temperatures.
  • Recognize and emergency and act upon it.
  • Work a minimum of 20 hours per week (summer season only) including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Required Certifications:

  • Starfish Aquatics Institute Starfish Swim Instructor Certification
  • American Red Cross Basic Life Support Certification (CPR/AED/First Aid)
  • American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens Certification
  • Michigan Mandated Reporter Training
