What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Attendant position at City of Las Cruces?
Performs the custodial/janitorial functions in maintaining a clean environment and performs minor building maintenance on assigned City buildings and facilities.
Environmental FactorsPosition functions primarily indoors with frequent exposure to industrial cleaning chemicals and building dusts. Noise and vibration of electrical/mechanical equipment occurs frequently. Protective clothing is available and must be used.
Physical FactorsPosition is moderately physical requiring lifting from all levels, carrying up to 25 pounds occasionally, pushing/pulling up to 25 pounds frequently, pushing/pulling 150-pound carpet shampooing machine occasionally, climbing ladders, and balancing.
Work Situation FactorsPosition involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, nights, weekends, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.
FIRST CONSIDERATION MAY BE GIVEN TO CURRENT CITY OF LAS CRUCES EMPLOYEES WHO MEET ALL THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS.
This position is graded at CN05.
- Performs custodial and janitorial duties within assigned City buildings, empties trash cans, dusts and cleans offices, including dusting books, cabinets, shelves, and furniture and otherwise attending to the neatness and sanitation of buildings or equipment
- Scrubs, strips, mops, buffs, and waxes floors using power-driven machines; washes windows; shampoos rugs using shampooing machine; operates vacuum sweeper; uses cleaning fluids, chemicals and protective equipment to clean, sanitize, and deodorize facilities; provides general maintenance and repair of small equipment; picks up custodial supplies when necessary.
- Sweeps walkways and building entrances; performs general clean-up of grounds; uses common tools, such as a hammer, screwdriver and/or ladder to make minor repairs.
- May transport equipment in a City vehicle to and from various City facilities; organizes furniture and equipment for a variety of City functions held at assigned City facilities; provides support to City staff in the implementation of special events held at assigned City facilities.
- Responsible for daily opening and locking of facilities; may perform security functions in the absence of the contracted vendor and during special events.
- Performs routine maintenance on buildings, such as electrical, plumbing, minor painting, etc.
Licenses/Certifications
Valid driver’s license may be required for designated positions. If applicable, position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City policy.
Basic Knowledge of: Cleaning methods, materials, and equipment; proper handling and mixing of cleaning chemicals; safety procedures and OSHA regulations; City policies and procedures; the operation and care of electric sweepers, wet/dry vacuum cleaners, and minor building maintenance equipment.Ability to: Read and understand written instructions and procedures; prioritize work and maintain accurate records; follow oral instructions; perform the physical requirements of the position; establish and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external customers.
Skills in: Safe operation of cleaning and minor building maintenance equipment; small equipment repair.
