The Office of Councilwoman Dr. Suely Saro is looking for a highly motivated individual to join the District 6 team as the Community Affairs Deputy (Legislative Assistant).  


The role of the Community Affairs Deputy is to represent Councilwoman Saro to the residents of the Sixth District and the greater Long Beach community and serve as a liaison between district constituents, City Departments, and the City Council. Under the direction of the Chief of Staff, the Community Affairs Deputy assists with casework, plans and coordinates district events, supports office operations, fosters meaningful connections with residents and stakeholders, and attends meetings and events with and on behalf of the Councilwoman.

Councilwoman Saro has served on the Long Beach City Council since 2020. She is committed to uplifting neighborhoods and strengthening businesses to create a thriving community. The district includes the city's central portion, encompassing neighborhoods such as Cambodian Town, Martin Luther King Jr. Park, Poly High School, St. Mary’s Medical Center, and Memorial Hospital.   • Manage all constituent concerns, ensuring timely and effective resolution while maintaining clear communication and providing excellent customer service.
  • Strengthen relationships with residents, businesses, community organizations, and other stakeholders throughout the district and the city.
  • Plan and manage projects, district events, and initiatives. 
  • Support office operations such as answering phone calls, checking voicemail messages, district 6 emails, as well as scheduling and calendaring meetings.
  • Assist in communications such as developing talking points, newsletters, and social media, etc.
  • Attend meetings and events with and on behalf of the Councilmember in the evenings and on the weekend. 


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO FILE:

  • A high school diploma.
  • One year of experience working with culturally and ethnically diverse populations for a community group, nonprofit or government agency.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and evenings as needed. 


HIGHLY DESIRABLY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university OR 4 years of equivalent experience in communications, political science, public policy, or related fields.

  • A strong work ethic and demonstrated ability to manage complex tasks and prioritize competing demands to meet deadlines.
  • Team-focused, enjoy working as part of an active group of highly engaged individuals, sharing information readily with co-workers, and listening to and respecting others; able and willing to assist co-workers in the development of their own professional skills to ensure the team’s success.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English and/or Khmer/English is a plus)

This position is an exempt, at-will position. The incumbent will not accrue any civil service tenure or contractual employment rights in such position. 

The Legislative Assistant is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Council Office.
