Summary/Objective Contributes to public health and fire protection by assisting with the installation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution system.
Essential Functions
- Operate the backhoe/loader, compact excavator, skid steer loader, trencher, and other related equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Ensure the proper preventative maintenance, necessary repairs and replacement, routine inspection, and servicing of the equipment.
- Operate pipe-tapping machines for the installation of new water services.
- Repair water leaks, water main breaks, and fire hydrants using repair clamps, pipe couplings, cast iron pipefitting, ductile iron pipe, and other related material.
- Communicate orally and in writing, including using the telephone and two-way radio.
- Interpret plans, repair manuals, other maintenance material and implement procedures and practices of preventative maintenance.
Supervisory Responsibilities (if applicable)
- In the absence of the Crew Leader, position will supervise Maintenance Technician(s)

- Maintain harmonious working relationships with coworkers and project a positive image of the City to the public.
- Respond promptly to emergency callbacks during non-duty hours.
Requirements
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- One year experience operating heavy equipment. In lieu of years of experience, internal candidates can demonstrate proficiency through completion of a field competency test.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
Residency requirement:
• Must reside within 25 miles of the city limits of Manhattan, Kansas.
