The school crossing guard directs actions of children and traffic at street intersections to insure the safe crossing of children and other pedestrians during hours when children are going to or coming from school. The employee must exercise good judgment in the application of procedures and regulations.
- Stands at designated street intersection and directs the actions of school children and other persons to insure safe crossing of the street.
- Records license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic safety and reports to the Police Department.
- Escorts children or other persons across the street as needed.
- Keeps order to prevent disturbance at the street intersections.
- Takes a post at an assigned intersection for up to three scheduled time periods during each school day.
- Reports irregularities and hazards to appropriate personnel.
- Answers questions and gives directions on requests.
- Assist at special events to help citizens cross streets safely.
Education: No educational requirements
Experience: Some experience in directing vehicular and pedestrian traffic is preferred but not required; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Certifications/Licenses: No certification/license requirements
This position must have thorough knowledge of traffic direction, safety methods and State of Wisconsin driving laws and regulations; thorough knowledge of the geography of the city; ability to maintain discipline; the ability to recognize traffic hazards; make quick decisions using good judgment; work outside in adverse weather conditions; display courtesy and professionalism at all times; dependability; and the desire to work with children. This position needs the ability to work split shift schedules during the day. This position must have the ability to communicate effectively verbally with people of all ages but particularly with children and apply situational reasoning ability by exercising good judgment and decisiveness in short periods of time.
