Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Water Distribution Supervisor, this position involves the reading of the City Water Meters. The Meter Reader will report damaged or unusual meter conditions, perform customer service requests regarding meter reads and perform related or other required duties as assigned.Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Meter Reader I classification is the entry-level classification in the series and performs duties in reading city water meters.Essential Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Accurately read and input mechanical and electronic meter readings in the recording of water consumption and usage.
May be required to repair meters, as it becomes necessary.
May be required to assist in general maintenance duties, as needed.
Knowledge of:
- Knowledge and application of safe work practices.
- Knowledge of canine behavior.
- Map reading skills.
- Walk 7 to 10 miles per day, climb embankments, stairs and fences to four feet height, crawl through narrow spaces, and bend constantly while reading meters.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions and act responsibly in potentially difficult situations.
- Learn utility billing procedures.
- Work independently with minimal or no supervision.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with water customers and coworkers.
- Maintain attention to detail especially with numbers.
- Give input for meter routes and their scheduling.
- Work overtime as required.
- Read several types and styles of water meters in a variety of neighborhoods.
- Record meter readings on handheld electronic interrogators.
- Check for inoperative, damaged or illegally bypassed meters.
- Initiate field orders to repair damaged meters, report water leaks, safety hazards or unsafe conditions on streets and sidewalks.
- Answer questions regarding water meter readings, customer billing, or consumption; refer customers to the proper personnel if additional information is required.
- Report to work every scheduled workday.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environment:
Indoor and outdoor work environment.Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions.
Physical Demands:
Ability to walk 7-10 miles per day reading water meters.Ability to install and repair water meters – 5/8" to 8" size – light to heavy.
Ability to lift 0-60 pounds, twist, bend, stoop, kneel, push, pull, squat, and reach overhead.
Ability to work in traffic areas (streets); set up traffic lane control.
Ability to operate light to medium tools.
Ability to withstand exposure to high noise levels in working with equipment
Ability to work in confined areas – pipelining in trenches, pump houses and alleys.
Ability to report to work on every scheduled workday.
Hazards:
Working around and with machinery having moving parts.Working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber.
Traffic hazards.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from the twelfth grade or successful completion of the G.E.D.
No experience required.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Valid California Class C driver's license.
