Description : The City of Maryland Heights seeks a Planner I for the Community Development Department. The Planner I performs administrative, professional, and technical work in the administration and preparation of current and long range planning programs of the city related to land use policies, comprehensive planning, zoning administration and development review.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the City’s Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code.
- Evaluates the potential impacts from proposed development.
- Evaluates land development and subdivision plans for compliance with codes, regulations, and design standards.
- Assists in the evaluation of transportation and traffic impacts generated by land development proposals and zoning amendments.
- Provides professional advice and makes presentations to supervisors, boards, commissions, civic groups, and the general public.
- Prepares a variety of studies, reports, draft ordinances, correspondence, and related documents for decision-making purposes.
- Provides staff support to the Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, and City Council as needed and assigned.
- Assists Building Commissioner in the interpretation of City codes and special zoning ordinances.
- Prepares thematic maps using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Responds to residents, real estate agents, developers, and design professionals inquiring about city planning and zoning regulations and ordinances.
- All other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in land-use planning, urban planning, landscape architecture or a closely related field, and
- Two (2) years experience in municipal or regional planning; or
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience, additional education substituting on a year for year basis for the required experience.
Necessary knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of zoning laws and comprehensive plans including their formation, process of adoption, and enforcement;
- Extensive knowledge of planning programs and processes;
- Working knowledge of Personal Computers and GIS applications;
- Skill in the area of site planning, including both site design and development review;
- Skill in the operation of the listed tools and equipment;
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in narrative and/or graphic form with architects, contractors, developers, owners, supervisors, employees, and the general public.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships.
- Regular and reliable attendance required
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid State Driver's License, or ability to obtain one.
