The purpose of this position is to protect life and property, prevent or suppress crime, apprehend criminals, and enforce laws. Work is performed independently in accordance with departmental procedures and policies under the direction of the Police Chief or his/her designee; the incumbent exercises considerable judgment and decision-making in handling sensitive and/or emergency situations.
Other duties may be assigned as needed.
- Supervises employees, which may include commissioned and non-commissioned officers, on assigned shifts, units or squads, including planning, assigning, and directing work; training employees; reviewing employees' work to ensure effectiveness and compliance with instructions, departmental policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws; appraising performance and counseling employees; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Supervises and coordinates personnel matters for assigned employees, develops and counsels personnel, documents incidents of good and substandard performance, maintains incident files, ensures adequate staffing and approves requests for time off.
- Supervises officer/vehicle appearance, and ensures appropriate care and maintenance of city equipment.
- Conducts shift briefings; reviews and approves all reports submitted by employees.
- Disseminates memos, policies, and orders and ensures that employees understand and comply with them.
- Performs research or gathers information for reports and/or program development.
- Enforces federal, state and local laws; may be called in for emergency policing situations.
A combination of the experience, education, and training listed below which provides an equivalent background to perform the work of this position.
Experience:
- Must have four years of experience as a commissioned, full-time, fully compensated, certified peace officer.
- Must have successfully completed, prior to the date of application, at least two years of service with the Marysville Police Department -OR- at least one year of service with the Marysville Police Department AND two years law enforcement supervisory experience in a civilian governmental jurisdiction..
- Must have successfully completed the probationary period as a police officer with the City of Marysville prior to the date of application.
Education and Training:
- High school diploma or GED certificate is required.
Other Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age by date of application.
- Must be able to successfully complete the City's civil service examination process for Police Sergeant.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony offense.
- Must be a citizen of the United States of America or lawful permanent resident.
- Must be able to work a variety of scheduled shifts up to twelve (12) hour duration including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license.
- Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date, first aid and CPR certifications.
- Must maintain Washington State Peace Officer Certification as mandated by Washington State law.

This position works in an office and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. The employee sometimes works in or near moving traffic and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, or toxic or caustic chemicals, or vicious or otherwise dangerous animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
