This recruitment is open to all qualified applicants, and we strongly encourage those who have already graduated from a Wisconsin police academy and are either a currently certified Wisconsin police officer or have graduated from a Wisconsin police academy within the last year to apply. This process will establish an eligibility list for a current vacancy on hold based on the outcome of a Nov. 5, 2024 referendum.

Per the current labor agreement, City of Monona police officers are required to reside in Dane County, within 50 miles of Monona City Hall. This residency requirement must be fulfilled by the end of the officer's 18-month probationary period. Salary shown for this position is the 2024 contract salary range. Lateral transfers are possible at the discretion of the Chief.The following duties are normal for the position. - Proof of at least 60 college credits earned from an accredited institution
- Wisconsin Police Academy certificate of completion; or Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification

- Conducts routine preventive patrol in designated areas of the City; patrols residential/business areas for detection of violators; initiates contacts with both business operators and residents; maintains an open line of communication within the community;
- Responds to calls for police service;
- Provides information and/or assistance to the public (this is a community service-oriented community)
- Investigates traffic accidents, enforces traffic violations, conducts driver intoxication investigations, conducts criminal and non-criminal investigations, performs surveillance, conducts follow-up investigations;
- Enforces Federal, State and local laws;
- Prepares written reports, forms, and other documents as required;
- Testifies in criminal and civil court proceedings; gives depositions.
The following are minimum qualifications for this position. Those who do not meet the minimum qualifications will be rejected from consideration.
- Must be at least 18 years of age;
- Must be a citizen of the United States;
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent;
- Must have a valid Wisconsin driver's license (or the ability to obtain a Wisconsin driver's license if one is not held), along with a good driving record;
- Must have no felony convictions (unless pardoned);
- Must have no domestic abuse convictions;
- Must have the ability to speak and understand the English language;
- Must be in good physical condition;
- Must have vision correctable to 20/20;
- Must have 60 college credits or the ability to obtain 60 credits within 4 years of hire.
- Must be a current certified Wisconsin police officer or a Wisconsin police academy graduate within the last year.
Qualified candidates must possess the following knowledge and abilities:
- Must have the ability to possess a firearm and skills to safely handle a firearm;
- Must be able to react quickly and effectively to stressful situations;
- Must have the ability to exercise discretion when investigating complex and/or sensitive crimes.
- Must have knowledge and skills in operating computer systems;
- Must have the ability to handle several tasks simultaneously;
- Must have the ability to use all standard law enforcement equipment;
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Must be able to work different shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
