JOB SUMMARY:
The Public Works Crewman position is responsible for collecting, transporting, and disposing garbage, trash, and recyclable materials. The position is also responsible for a variety of roadway maintenance and public works construction tasks. The Public Works Crewperson will be responsible for other duties as assigned by the Public Works Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent, or the Fleet Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as all-inclusive.
  • Operates automated collection truck for refuse and recycling collection.
  • Performs manual collection of household waste and yard waste.
  • Operates vehicles, machinery, and equipment (including heavy equipment) to complete street-related daily assignments.
  • Hauls garbage, recyclables, gravel, sand, dirt, blacktop, snow, and other materials using City vehicles and equipment.
  • Operates snow and ice removal equipment. Applies salt and other materials to streets, bridges, sidewalks, and parking lots.
  • Cleans, constructs, and maintains sanitary sewers, storm sewers, streets, sidewalks, gutters, and lift stations.
  • Cleans, inspects, and maintains detention pond fountains and aerators.
  • Performs forestry work including pruning, removal, stump grinding and planting.
  • Performs minor repairs of streets including patching, crack filling and sealcoating.
  • Cuts grass and weeds. Maintains landscaping at city facilities and in city street right-of-way.
  • Pours and finishes concrete pavement, curb, walk and driveways.
  • Preforms backup assistance in other departments as assigned
  • Performs decorative banner and flag replacements
  • Performs daily and minor maintenance of various City vehicles including, but not limited to cleaning, refueling, and checking fluids.
  • Performs daily maintenance, scheduled minor maintenance, and cleaning of various City facilities.
  • Communicates with supervisors, co-workers, citizens, and vendors as needed.
  • Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works overtime and extra hours as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor(s)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Requires a high school diploma, one or more years heavy manual work experience, a valid Commercial Driver's License, and a good driving record. Requires a valid State of Wisconsin CDL with B, C, D and Class N (tanker) endorsement.

Ability to read and interpret written documentation.
REASONING ABILITY
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to work on own with little supervision. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Must have a clear working knowledge of the city streets and its vicinities. Ability to follow a map and directions. Requires the ability and skill to operate a variety of maintenance vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment safely and effectively.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, climb, bend, twist, stoop and or kneel. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, grasp, hold or feel and for fine manipulation purposes and make repetitive hand movement in performance of daily duties.
  • The individual is frequently required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms with a coordinated movement of more than one limb simultaneously. They must be able to perform heavy manual labor and work in adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • The employee must be able to frequently lift and/or move more than 50 pounds regularly and 100 or more pounds occasionally. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to dirt, grit, household waste products, fumes or airborne particles. The employee is also regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; traffic hazards; toxic or caustic chemicals; various adverse outside weather conditions for extended periods of time; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.
  • This individual will be exposed to a variety of weather elements, varying from high heat and humidity to bitter cold temperatures, snow, ice, and heavy rain.
  • The noise level in the work environment is a combination of moderate and loud.
  • The employee will maintain punctual regular attendance and may be required to respond to after-hours emergency calls-outs and perform routine standby duties as needed.
