The City of Norfolk's Department of Recreation, Parks & Open Spaces is seeking a Forestry Crew Leader to lead member of a crew which prunes or removes public trees. The Forestry Crew Leader reports to the Forestry Supervisor, maintains all required paperwork, and enters daily work performed in a forestry operations log book. The Forestry Crew Leader must possess arboricultural skills, customer service skills, organizational skills, and safety practices which are applied to complete assigned tasks, communicate with customers, complete required paperwork, and lead the crew to safely and efficiently complete daily workload. The Forestry Crew Leader participates in after-hours emergency response and/or storm related tree work involving downed trees and large limbs.
Departmental Hiring Range: $42,029 to $46,925

Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Leads tree crews to complete work assignments provided by supervisor, begins tasks with job briefings, applies best arobricultural techniques, files daily work reports, makes log book entries and ensures compliance with OSHA, ANSI and VDOT safety standards.
- Leads a 3-person crew to safely and efficiently complete daily workload.
- Establishes annual goals and objectives for equipment operators and tree trimmers. Conducts periodic performance reviews of crews.
- Maintains all required paperwork, and enters daily work performed in a forestry operations log book.
- Responds to after hours emergency calls from supervisors, the City's emergency operations center and/or co-workers to remove fallen trees, cracked/hanging limbs during and after storms or vehicle accidents.
- Oversees the operation and maintenance of crew vehicles and equipment by ensuring compliance with city standards and procedures and providing periodic OTJ training in arboricultural standards, equipment use and safety.
Education/Experience
High school diploma required. Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational or technical nature. An associate's degree, or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school preferred.
Three years experience in professional tree care required. Three years of supervisory experience preferred or any combination of education beyond high school and experience.
Additional Information & Requirements
Signing Bonus:This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.
- Valid Driver's License required.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (Class B) required at the time of employment.
- Certified Commercial Pesticide Technician obtained within six (6) months of employment.
- CPR/First Aid Certification obtained within six (6) months of employment.
- ISA Certified Tree Worker/ Climber Specialist or Aerial lift specialist preferred.
- ISA Certified Arborist preferred.
Work Hours: Tuesday to Friday, 6:30 am to 5:00 pm
Work hours may change seasonally, additional on-call schedule.
