If so, the City of Norfolk's Police Department is seeing candidates for the position of Forensic Specialist within the Detective Division.
The incumbent is responsible for processing evidence as it relates to criminal and internal investigations, acts as a principal or assistant at major crimes scenes, and prepares reports to testify in court.
***The departmental hiring salary range for this position is $54,652 - $62,850 annually***
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Identify, collect, document, preserve, transport, and process evidence associated with criminal and internal investigations.
- Acts as a principal, or when necessary, an assistant at major crime scenes.
- Process property crime scenes independently.
- Document crime scenes using sketching and measurements, photography, and digital recordings.
- Prepare reports and testify in court.
- Attends specialized training.
- Works and communicates effectively with colleagues, complainants, victims, and witnesses.
- Maintains assigned vehicle and inspects and maintains personal equipment.
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Knowledge is normally acquired through two years of college resulting in an Associate's Degree or equivalent.
Retired police officer or considerable work in a law enforcement agency or completion of the Virginia Department of Forensic Science Academy or its equivalent.

Work Schedule:
Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings/midnights), including weekends and holidays. Must be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs.
Signing Bonus:
This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period and/or recruit academy. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.
