JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: School Crossing Guard
Department: Police Department
Reports To: Chief of Police or designated supervisor
Position Summary:
The School Crossing Guard ensures the safe passage of children to and from school at designated crossing locations within the City of North Canton. This position plays a critical role in promoting pedestrian safety and traffic control in school zones.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Directs pedestrian and vehicular traffic at assigned school crossing locations.
2. Assists children and pedestrians in safely crossing streets during designated hours.
3. Monitors and observes traffic flow to identify potential hazards and take preventive measures.
4. Reports traffic violations and unsafe conditions to local law enforcement authorities.
5. Provides friendly and courteous assistance to children, parents, and school staff.
6. Maintains a professional and alert demeanor while on duty.
7. Follows established procedures and guidelines for traffic control and pedestrian safety.
8. Coordinates with school administrators, local police, and transportation officials as necessary.
9. Attends training sessions and meetings as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
- Good physical condition to stand and walk for extended periods in various weather conditions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Awareness of traffic laws and basic safety principles.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience as a crossing guard or in a related field.
- Certification in CPR and First Aid.
- Familiarity with local traffic patterns and school zones.
Working Conditions:
- Shifts typically coincide with school opening and closing times, Monday through Friday.
- Work environment includes exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
- Visual and auditory acuity to assess traffic and respond to safety concerns.
