What are the responsibilities and job description for the Network Specialist I position at City of North Platte?
Under general supervision of the Director of Information Systems, performs technical work involving networking hardware and software used to support the City/County networking system.
Essential Job Functions:
- Responsible for installing networking and communications software, hardware, and cabling systems; and maintaining hardware and software inventories.
- Assist in the configuration of VLANs and routing tables within various models of HP switches.
- Assist in the configuration and implementation of network security services including firewalls, Antivirus, and various other security related functions.
- Provide technical assistance in the use of networking services; evaluate network hardware and software and prepare reports.
- Provide technical assistance to department computer users and/or refer them to appropriate personnel for assistance.
- Install and configure PC workstations, printers, other network hardware and software, perform hardware and software upgrades to existing systems, and assist employees in their use.
- Troubleshoot computer problems to determine cause of failure and perform necessary repairs.
- Maintain equipment documentation consisting of purchasing information, original and current configuration, installed software and repair information.
- Provide support for client mail applications and server-based enterprise-email systems (i.e., Outlook and Exchange).
- Set up and maintain security profiles; perform application and data backup procedures on department computers; provide recommendations for acquiring and replacing computer equipment to include research of end user’s needs.
- Perform other work which is consistent with the essential elements of the job.
Desired Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Knowledge of computer capabilities and associated networking equipment.
- Ability to install, operate and maintain computer equipment running on various Operating Systems to include Linux and Microsoft Windows.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in analyzing network systems and to make recommendations and modifications.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities concurrently.
- Knowledge of firewalls, routers, switches, VMWare, Linux Server, Windows Server, Windows Desktop, and printers.
- Knowledge of structured wiring systems.
- Ability to analyze customer requirements and document/design appropriate solutions.
- Ability to use common hand tools.
- Ability to perform sedentary physical work and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, data suppliers, users, and the public.
- Must be team oriented and customer focused with a strong technical aptitude.
Desireable Experience and Training:
- Possess an Associate Degree in Computer Information Systems, or equivalent degree with two years’ work experience in the installation, maintenance, and operation of Local or Wide Area Networks.

Pay: $27.44 - $40.05 per hour
