JOB TITLE: Crossing Guard


DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Public Safety


SUMMARY OF FUNCTION

Directs actions of children and traffic at street intersections and school entrances to ensure safe crossings; monitors and enforces school zone speed limits.

This position is a non-supervisory classification and receives limited supervision, consulting with Field Supervisor in unusual situations.


REPORTS TO: Community Resources Officer


ESSENTIAL TASKS

  • Patrols street crossings and school entrances during hours when children are going to and coming from school.
  • Directs the actions of children and traffic
  • Escorts children across the street
  • Records license numbers of vehicles disregarding the school zone speed limit
  • Places and removes caution signs and cones
  • Cautions drivers of speeding vehicles by use of whistles and/or hand signals

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITES

  • This job requires some physical exertion such as walking, climbing, bending, stooping, stretching, or similar activities. The work also requires standing for long periods of time.
  • Candidates must be able to think and react independently to various situations.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITION

  • Works early mornings and afternoons (Specific hours are determined when assigned to school)
  • On occasion may be required to work specific assignments
  • Incumbent works ten (10) months out of the year

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Degree from an accredited high school, or GED.

SALARY RANGE - This is a part-time position in a non-unionized environment with an hourly rate of $15.00.
