JOB

Summary:
Performs semi-skilled tasks in the construction and maintenance of streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, traffic sign maintenance, tree trimming and removal, and related areas of work. Performs manual labor tasks in a wide variety of maintenance and construction work. Assignments require some degree of skill, which may have been taught as on the job training. Duties are generally routine and normally performed under the direction of a Maintenance Worker III or IV with some degree of independence. May operate a truck or work-related equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists in installing asphalt materials in connection with paving and repairs of asphalt surface.

Operates jackhammer, pumps, concrete/asphalt saws, chain saws, roller, edger, weed- eater, leaf blower, brush chipper, stump grinder and related equipment.

Assists in setting forms and installing concrete.

Operates trucks and other job-related equipment (may include operation of aerial bucket truck).

Assists in maintaining streets, right of ways, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and traffic signs.

Assists in trimming and removing trees on City properties and right of ways.

Assists in installing and removing special event signage.

Assists in keeping assigned workspace, vehicles and equipment clean and in operational order.

Prepares daily labor and material reports.

Participates in on-call and after-hours duties as assigned. Must be available for overtime and emergency call-outs when necessary.

Assists in preparation for, response to, and recovery from, the impacts of a wide variety of disasters or emergency situations and may be temporarily assigned to other duties, locations, and shifts.

Meets attendance requirements.

Promotes positive customer service environment internally and externally.

Performs other job-related functions as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
None.

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent recognized certificate, supplemented by one (1) year experience in the construction and maintenance of street and right of way work, including concrete, asphalt and tree work.

Qualification Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license and the ability to obtain a valid Florida Commercial Drivers’ License class B or above with air brake endorsement within six (6) months of employment. Must receive permit within first two (2) months, next two (2) months of training and final two (2) months to schedule driving test.

Individuals applying for this position or incumbents of this position are required to hold (or obtain within 6 months of employment) a valid commercial driver’s license (class B or above) as a condition of employment. All applicants applying for a position that requires a CDL and employees currently holding a CDL as required by their position description are subject to pre-employment and continuing post-employment drug and alcohol testing. Failure to comply with such testing is grounds for termination of employment.

Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Certification within six (6) months of employment.

Fork Lift Operator Certification within six (6) months of employment.

Experience in performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks.

Some knowledge of the tools, methods, materials and equipment used in the performance of street maintenance related work.

Knowledge of current traffic rules and regulations.

Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.

Physical Demands:

Sufficient physical strength and agility to do manual labor for extended periods of time and under adverse weather conditions.

Ability to move up to 75 lbs. over a distance of 100 feet.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle under all weather conditions any time of day or night.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to climb, balance, stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant, and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Sufficient auditory perception and speaking ability for radio communication.

Work Environment:

Works outside with exposure to hazardous weather, vegetation, and wildlife.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very high.

Regularly works near moving mechanical equipment.

Work may be performed in aerial equipment at heights of over sixty (60) feet above the ground.

Electrical lines are often in the vicinity of work being performed.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available for review to insure employee is familiar with appropriate safe handling procedures associated with each chemical of interest.
