What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire Inspector position at City of Panama City Beach?

This position conducts inspections and plan reviews to ensure compliance with fire codes.
 
  • Conducts field inspections of permitted development to ensure compliance with all codes and ordinances; conducts field inspections of residential, multi-family, or commercial structures.
 
  • Reviews and analyzes building site plans to determine compliance with codes and ordinances; receives applications and coordinates plan reviews for new construction and renovations.
 
  • Investigates life safety code violation complaints from the public.
 
  • Performs annual inspections of new and existing businesses.
 
  • Inspects and reviews permitting for special events venues to ensure compliance with life safety codes.
 
  • Reviews fire alarm run reports and follows-up with service companies to ensure compliance.
 
  • Conducts water flow calculations for fire suppression systems.
 
  • Prepares a variety of regular and special reports.
 
  • Performs firefighting duties as needed.
 
  • Performs related duties.

 
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
 
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
 
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
 
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training.
 
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain Florida Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications.
 
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain Florida EMT certification.
 
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain Fire Safety Inspector I certification.
 
  • CPR certifications


KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

 

  • Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques used in fire code inspections.

 

  • Knowledge of building and fire code enforcement principles.

 

  • Knowledge of current and accepted fire prevention, firefighting, rescue, emergency medical, and hazardous materials procedures.

 

  • Knowledge of emergency medical protocols, principles, and standards.

 

  • Knowledge of fire and emergency response equipment, tools, and vehicles.

 

  • Knowledge of departmental and city policies and procedures and related federal, state, and local guidelines.

 

  • Knowledge of city streets and geography.

 

  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.

 

  • Skill in operating emergency vehicles and equipment.

 

  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.

 

  • Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.

 

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

 

The Fire Inspections/Prevention Manager assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the results.

 

GUIDELINES

 

Guidelines include fire, building, and other codes and ordinances; National Fire Protection Association standards; and department and city policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.  

 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

 

  • The work consists of varied fire inspection and code enforcement duties. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the position.

 

  • The purpose of this position is to participate in the department’s fire inspection, code enforcement, and fire prevention activities. Success in this position contributes to the safety of life and property in the City.

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city employees, association managers, general manager, job site superintendents, other inspectors, property owners, and members of the public.

 

  • Contacts typically exchange information, resolve problems, justify matters, and provide services.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light objects, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

 

  • The work is typically performed in an office, outdoors, and at emergency and fire scenes. The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, inclement weather, and a variety of potentially life-threatening situations. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.

 None.
