What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Camp Counselor position at City of Pflugerville?
As a Lead Camp Counselor, you will be responsible for the complete daily operations of the camp program including supervising camp participants.
- Set up and organize activity areas and supplies during staff training.
- Delegate staff their responsibilities in activity during staff training.
- Teach and monitor the proper use of equipment and/or supplies.
- Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory and store equipment for safety.
- Check equipment and make repairs or place orders for supplies on an ongoing basis.
- Conduct daily checks of program area(s) and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
- Write up and report accurate incident and injury records on all participants, as needed.
- Write down and insure proper communication of all planned activities with the Assistant Camp Director in a timely fashion.
- Be accountable for group field trip monies and receipts to be returned promptly to the Assistant Camp Director.
- Guide groups and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities.
- Keep and report all incident and injury records on all participants, as needed.
- Assist in the planning and coordination of special events including inter-camp games/activities for camp teams, theme weeks/days, and other well-structured programs.
- Other related duties as required or assigned, including minor maintenance activities.
Formal Education: N/A
Relatable Work Experience: Must be at least 16 years old. Experience working with children ages 5 to 13 years old. Experience planning a broad range of activities including sports, games, arts & crafts, music, and field trips.
Training, Licenses, and Certifications: Adult and Child CPR (must be able to obtain before the start of camp); Standard First Aid (must be able to obtain before the start of camp); American Red Cross Basic Water Rescue Course.
Disclaimer: Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is define as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:
Knowledge of child development, what to expect of children in different situations, and group management techniques.
Knowledge and skills in group activity planning in order to teach skills to staff.
Skill in utilizing a personal computer, associated software programs, including Windows and Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to establish and maintain professionally effective relationships with external public/vendors, internal management and non-management employees, and City and other government officials.
Ability to develop, implement, and administer goals, objectives, and procedures for providing effective and efficient services for the City.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, as well as strong time and task management skills.
Ability to supervise program assistants and make scheduling assignments.
ability to work with children and adults in an outdoor camp setting.
Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
Ability to assist in teaching activities.

Environmental Factors and Other Physical Requirements:
Subject to sitting and standing to perform essential functions in an office and outdoor environment.
Visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate office equipment.
Occasional strenuous physical activity, including carrying, pulling, pushing, dragging, swimming and holding up to 30 lbs. of furniture/equipment.
Routine exposure to loud noise and large crowds of people.
Weekend and holiday schedule, as needed for special events/programs.
Work may routinely require the employee to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, run, and/or crawl.
Regularly scheduled for 5-day, 45-hour workweek, Monday through Friday; overtime occasionally required.
