About This Position

The Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserves. The parks feature 41 trailheads and more than 200 miles of trails, and 185 city parks. Additionally, there are 32 community and recreation centers, classes, and sports programs for all ages, 29 pools, eight golf courses, and a variety of specialty and cultural venues and facilities.

Project B.R.A.V.E (Bringing Reality About Violence Education) is a violence prevention education program targeting elementary, middle-schools, community recreation centers, non-profit agencies, and after-school sites throughout the metropolitan Phoenix area. The goal of Project BRAVE is to decrease violence in communities through awareness and leadership training activities. Youth Counselors assist Recreation Coordinator II in the facilitation of Project BRAVE curriculum. Counselors also create and build partnerships with schools and organizations, build and research violence prevention education curriculum, and create presentations using Microsoft office programs, and internet-based software.

Currently there are two vacancies in the Parks and Recreation Department. Youth Counselors assist Recreation Coordinator II in the facilitation of Project B.R.A.V.E curriculum. Counselors also create and presentations using Microsoft office programs, and internet-based software.

  • Areas of responsibility include:
  • Work in economically disadvantaged and culturally diverse populations.
  • Communicate accurately, clearly, and professionally, in writing and orally by telephone or in a one-to-one or group setting.
  • Organize and plan group projects.
  • Produce documents written in the English language using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Coordinate program with other social service resources.

SALARY

Pay Rate: $20.51

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 343. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

Benefits

Part-time employees are eligible for earned paid sick time, city training, and free or discounted bus and light rail fares.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three years of experience in anti-poverty, community service counseling work, or early childhood (birth to five years) development.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprint ed and will have their fingerprint s used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate's suitability for the job.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience using computers and using POS, Microsoft Office, ACTIVE Net and more.
  • Experience in Teen programming.
  • Experience in group facilitation and classroom management.
  • Experience in facility and/or lateral management.
  • Experience supervising staff, volunteers, and contractors.
  • Experience building partnerships with community groups, stakeholders, and non-profits.
  • Experience working in special events.
  • Experience in full time recreation or a related field.
