The City of Rancho Palos Verdes is looking for a highly motivated, individual with a strong work ethic to monitor activities and enforce City policies and procedures in our public parks and facilities. This is a non-sworn, entry-level position in the Park Ranger series. This is a continuous recruitment; therefore, this recruitment will remain open until filled. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply prior to this date, as this recruitment may close at any time without notice.DEPARTMENTThe Recreation and Parks Department is responsible for managing and operating a comprehensive park system, administering services in the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve and coordinating numerous community activities and events in its 12 urban parks. The Recreation and Parks Department oversees departmental administration, open space management, recreational facilities, programs and classes, special events, the REACH program serving the needs of the developmentally disabled community, and support services. PARK RANGER PROGRAMThe Recreation and Parks Department’s Park Ranger Program is an integral part of the Open Space Management (OSM) Division, and is comprised of a Senior Park Ranger and three Park Rangers. The City of Rancho Palos Verdes has over 50 miles of trails, 1,500 acres of Nature Preserve and breath-taking beaches. Park Rangers are responsible for patrolling the City's trails and open space, to educate visitors on proper use, enforce the City's Municipal Code, and enhance the experience and safety of the public. Park Rangers are scheduled to work 4 days per week, 10 hours per day (4/10 work schedule) allowing flexibility and work/life balance. The City trails and open space are patrolled from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. (depending on the time of year).POSITIONThis non-exempt position is represented by the Rancho Palos Verdes Employees Association. This is a great opportunity to engage in specific programs and activities related to parks, recreation and natural recreation areas while patrolling and monitoring parks and open spaces.Park Rangers spend the majority of their time in the field hiking and driving within the City's 1,500-acre Nature Preserve and City Beaches. During these patrols, they correct public use violations by educating visitors and issuing written citations when appropriate. The majority of their time is spent making public contact and effectively communicating with the public. Additionally, Park Rangers are responsible for the following duties: Correcting behavior of visitors in the City's open space areas, providing information on wayfinding, interpretation, and public safetyPerform open space operational tasks such as closing trails and areasPerform minor maintenance such as installing signage and cleaning graffitiWriting accurate daily reports of their patrols and observationAssist Open Space by updating the OSM website, creating maps, posting information online, coordinating projects in the Preserve, and tracking social media as it relates to OSM useCoordinate with land co-managers and other public safety agencies such as the Fire Department, Lifeguards, Department of Fish and Wildlife, and LA County Sheriff's DepartmentIDEAL CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate will be self-motivated, a team player with knowledge and experience of open space, trails and resource management, monitoring and enforcing rules and regulations while providing professional and technical assistance to the public as they enjoy and safely use the parks, Nature Preserve, and natural recreation areas.PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the essential functions of this job, the employee may frequently drive; work outdoors, and may be exposed to variable weather conditions. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50lbs and occasionally 75lbs with assistance. Employees must possess the ability to hike 5 miles or occasionally more in a day.DEFINITION AND CLASS CHARACTERISTICSUnder general supervision, a non-sworn position, patrols and monitors parks to enforce City rules, regulations, codes and ordinances and resolves disputes or conflicts among park patrons; involved in visitor services, maintenance and repair of park facilities, interpretive programs, safety enforcement and performs related work as required.This is the entry-level class in the Park Ranger series. This class is responsible for providing professional and technical assistance to the public so that they may enjoy and safely use parks, natural recreation and historical areas. Park Rangers perform both routine non-professional park operations duties as well as professional and technical park operation and management duties.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only)Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.Patrols city parks, beaches, natural recreation areas and other facilities by foot and vehicle enforcing rules and regulations, City codes and ordinances and issues citations as warranted; and to safeguard and preserve park facilities.Maintains peace and order by taking action ranging from warning and counseling individuals to ejecting or detaining for citation issuance.Provides courteous, high quality service to members of the public by personally responding to requests for service and appropriate referral.Performs routine and spontaneous maintenance as scheduled, observed or directed.Explains park policies and regulations; enforces cleanliness and sanitation standards.Conducts environmental inventories of parks to detect fire hazards, plant diseases, insect infestations, etc.; initiates control measures to correct or control environmental hazards or conditions.Prepares and maintains appropriate records, reports and correspondence.Interprets the natural and historical features of the park to park visitors; answers questions asked by the public and prepares exhibits and publication materials.Assists with the planning and assignment of work for auxiliary/temporary staff and volunteers in conducting area programs.Notifies Police and Fire authorities in the event of an emergency or hazardous situation and assists local law enforcement when necessary; may use CPR or first aid to assist.Provides assistance with security, crowd control and traffic flow for various City programs, functions and events.Unlocks facilities, conducts safety inspections and secures facilities.Required to work evenings, shifts, holidays and weekends.Performs other duties as assigned.
